You know, it's strangely tiring to sit at a desk all day when that desk is public, not hidden away in a nice little cubicle or office. I sit out here with no little upholstered walls, and I'm constantly subject to the will and whim of the public I serve, always at their beck and call regardless of what else I may need to be doing.
And the public is often whiny, let me tell you.
And it is draining (emotionally, physically) to face the needs of a whiny public, and to catch the brunt of all of their displeasure--founded or unfounded--with our institution and our services.
Every once in a while, you get that wonderful patron who is engaged in what you're doing and just so appreciative that you're doing it, and that's wonderful and affirming. But for every affirming patron, there are 5 who live only to complain.
Ah, well. Such are the foibles of a life of public service. We take the good with the bad, and the bad makes us tired.
Thank goodness for coffee.
