Fun Conversations With Hosto Mommy, Part.... whatever part we're on. uh. 37.
So, since I'm on vacation from school for a week -- THANK YOU, Japanese high school students, for taking your entrance exam and doing so at my college -- I get to eat lunch with my hosto mommy every day. [does a dance] YAY. And today, we somehow got on the conversation of meeting host kids for the first time -- she was telling me all about how worried they had been about writing in Japanese to their American students, in case they weren't able to read it.
And this came up:
Hosto Mommy: Yeah, so we wrote in English to you.
Me: Yeah, I saw. Thank you! I was so worried about meeting you guys. And it made it easier for my parents, because they wanted to read it too.
Hosto Mommy: Yeah, we got their letter. Your dad sent us this loooooong letter about how IMPORTANT you were and how if we needed any help, to just ask.
Me: Ahaha, yeeeah. I remember. He told me that he sent it, and I was just like, Whaaaat?
Hosto Mommy: Yeah, well, we got the letter and were like, "This is awesome! But... where is Allie? Why hasn't she replied?"
Me: Oh, yeah, I forwarded them the e-mail you sent, so they saw it. But since they were writing in English, it was easier for them to respond.
Hosto Mommy: Oh, I see.
Me: Yeah, it took me a couple days to figure out all the Japanese.
Hosto Mommy: [stare]
Me: ...cos I wrote you back in English and Japanese, because I wasn't sure.
Hosto Mommy: Wait, you wrote back? Really?
Me: ...yesssss.
Hosto Mommy: We never got that letter!
Me: Wait, what?!
Hosto Mommy: Yeah, we only got your father's letter. So we imagined that you were just a sweet little girl whose father does everything for her, and you would just sit there being like, "Yes, Daddy" and "Thank you, Daddy!" while he replied for you.
Me: ...
Hosto Mommy: And when we first met, you were all shy and embarrassed, and kept saying "sorry!" about everything, so...
Me: XDDD [dies laughing]
Moral of the story: don't let your parents e-mail your host family until you know that they got YOUR reply first. XDDD
