The movie Girl Interrupted is a movie that in many ways displays view of the effects on a person from a psychological standpoint. A girl is put into a mental institution and she allows her individuality to be altered but never all together changed. Her personality changes and affects those around her both in positive and negative ways.
The character Lisa is the one most affected by Susanna mostly cause she is the one who interacts with her most often, or is seen interacting with her most often. Lisa defends Susanna in many situations such as the ice cream place when the women verbally assaults Susanna and Lisa jumps to defend her because of the effect that she had on her. Once Lisa jumps in as an established leader the other girls, rise to the occasion and help each in their own weird twisted way. Janet lets loose and barks at the woman as if she where in reality lycanthrope who’s transformation was activated by a need to defend her fellow pack members. Daisy knocks the ice cream from the girl’s hand like some sort of angry chimp hurling feces into the faces of those who would threaten it. Susanna’s psychological impact on the group as a whole can be displayed in this scene as all the crazies band together to protect one of their own.
Another positive effect that Susanna has on Lisa can be seen in the scene where they sit outside of the room of Polly and sing to her to calm her down; a bond can seen forming between Susanna and Lisa. We see one of the times in the movie where Lisa genuinely smiles, not merely displaying a smirk that seems to hide some evil.
It can be seen in other ways Susanna negatively influences Lisa, her first appearance in the hospital Lisa comes screaming into the room and demands to know “who the hell are you?”
In many ways, Lisa is her own person but her interactions with Susanna often affect her mood. Near the end of the movie when Lisa discovers Susanna’s journal, and reads the things that Susanna never intended for her to see, she completely flips out chasing Susanna through the basement of the hospital. However, Susanna’s words are what stops Lisa and causes her to realize what is truly going on in her life. At his point full effect of Susanna’s influence into the life is apparent to be able to stop somebody’s psychotic homicidal rage with nothing but words would indicate that you are a very powerful force in there life or are at least viewed as one.
Susanna’s final interaction with Lisa is at the end when she enters the room where Lisa is tied down and gagged in a bed and she proceeds with one last act of friendship, one last attempt to repair the damage between them caused by the book and words that passed between them because of it. Lisa’s response is a tear drop which would seem to indicate forgiveness and at last an understanding of all that they had shared.
Another character in the movie deeply affected by Susanna is the character Daisy. Daisy who normally does not allow anyone into her room allows Susanna entrance. She allows her to enter because Susanna brings her what she wants. However along with Susanna comes Lisa which can be seen as an immediate negative part of Susanna’s first interaction with Daisy, however Susanna managed to make piece between them by allowing an exchange of medications which from the directors viewpoint may have been meant to show an exchange of friendly terms that would displayed through out a better part of the movie or more likely Susanna’s first move for acceptance in the institution she has been placed in.
Other interactions with Daisy do not yield such friendly everyone’s happy results. Towards the end of the movie Susanna arrives at Daisy’s new apartment and once again comes bearing Lisa with her this time no exchange is mad except for that of harsh words. Words that Susanna did not stop thus by not stepping in she helps shape the fate that awaited Daisy in the bathroom. She slit her wrists and hung herself, this I found interesting, cut wrists and hung a double death for a person who never really lived more than a half-life. Susanna has not one but two chances to stop Daisy’s demise first she could have prevented Lisa arrival at all and second she could have stepped in when Lisa started to verbally assault Daisy. Susanna doesn’t even go up to check on Daisy after she showed obvious signs of depression. Susanna’s guilt lead her to the realization that suicide is not a romantic notion and it is not the easy way out.
A minor part of the movie but one that sets the stage for the events that take place through out the movie is the time shown where Susanna interacts with her parents. These interactions which in turn led to her interactions with the psychiatrist. Which lead her to the institution. This should all be taken into account for her strangely unique some would say odd personality is what labels her as different. A difference which is interpreted as crazy.
Susanna interactions with minor character further serve to shape her destiny. She speaks to shrink who doesn’t truly this interaction is minor but it shows the willingness of people to ignore those who speak there mind and truly open up. She kisses an orderly and has man her bedroom these lead to a new psychiatrist one who does listen and the transfer of the orderly to the men’s branch of the institution. Her interactions with the nurse’s although sometimes deceptive gain her trust and grounds privileges.
The girl who she rooms with, a compulsive liar is never caught lying to Susanna, another sign that she has through different interactions with this character gainer her trust as well.
At the discovery of Susanna’s journal this character that is the calm, timid, usually frightened individual screams and for the first and only time in the movie lies to Susanna, say “my father is head of the CIA and he could have you dead in minutes”. Such a grotesquely false statement that truly shows the shattered trust brought about by the finding of Susanna’s personal thoughts caught on paper. Funny how even a persons thoughts, a persons private thoughts can cause interactions that lead to violent outbursts from such a down to earth if not completely sane quiet girl.
Susanna’s speaks with a different psychiatrist towards the end of the movie we are led to believe this new shrink is more experienced more caring and all around better person that the previous “the rapist” as Lisa put it. Through her talks with this new character she eventually gets to speak with the board in charge of releasing the patients back into regular life. Since she’s completely honest with this new professional she gets a better reaction she is actually listened to, and one step further shes’ understood.
Susanna interactions with others by her own choice affect her personality she essentially influences herself by interacting with others and responding to the effects of those interactions she controls the changing of her own personality. I mean I suppose this can be said for any human being but the choices made by Susana are sometimes quite outrageous.
Through out it all we can see the effects Susanna has on the enviroment around her shaping the destiny’s of all those who come in contact with her. In most cases helping in some cases not so much but this movie thourouly shows the psychological effects someone can have on those around them and how a human will always shape their surroundings in ways to better comfort or suit them.
