no quarter

OH THANK GOD.

The end of eight years of Republican rule. We are no longer the laughingstock of the world.

I'm tremendously relieved, but still wary.

There's this tendency among some liberal voters I've talked to who act like Obama is their best friend that they can absolutely trust. You cannot trust this man, anymore than you can trust any politician you don't know. He's a smart man, he's a decent guy, but he's a talking head on the TV, and I wish people would stop acting like he's their good buddy Barrack.

Because, as I will remind you, our nation will still be run by a party that gave overwhelming support to the Patriot Act. With ONE exception, democrats overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Patriot Act after 9-11. You know how Obama and Biden voted for the Patriot Act reauthorization? They voted in favor.

This is now our president and vice president that don't have the courage to stand up for equal rights for gays. This is shameful. My republican governor is a more fervent supporter of marriage equality

This is now our president and vice president who have worked to EXPAND the scope of the death penalty, and have worked to EXPAND the scope of government intrusion into our lives. Both of them literally write laws and campaign for expanding the number of offenses for which one can be executed. While I don't lose much sleep over criminals being executed in theory, the reality of our judicial system is that it isn't always fair and it isn't always perfect, and we do make mistakes. You can let someone out of jail, but you can't bring them back from the dead. We should be trying to eliminate the death penalty, or reduce it's scope, not increase the number of capital punishment offenses. We're ranked 5th in the world in executions, behind China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan...not the sort of club I want to be a part of.

Go celebrate. I am, because we just got rid of the worst president in the history of this nation, and avoided having a STUPID, STUPID, STUPID hockey mom as the second most powerful person in America.

But don't let your guard down.

Oh, and if you're a gunowner, or ever want to be, go buy more guns, because with Obama in the white house, and a democratic majority in congress, we've just voted in the most anti-gun administration in the history of this country, and they won't hesitate to take us all the way down the slippery slope if allowed to. Bans on all handguns, bans on all concealed carry, more bans on hunting rifles, another (useless) assault weapons ban...all in the works. I'm not "guessing" they want this, I'm going off the party platform, the statements of our new president, and of prominent democrats in congress. If they have their way, the only thing you'll have left is a break-barrel shotgun so you can go quail hunting with John Kerry and Joe Biden.

edit: Maybe, maybe, maybe democrats have learned. Probably not though. I think I'm trying to reassure myself, because I don't want to be stuck in the middle of the metaphorical political ocean between an island full of democrats that hate guns, and an island full of racist rednecks marching around with AR-15s playing the star spangled banner or some shit. It's times like this that I look at all my moderately liberal friends that love guns, and know I am a lucky, lucky man.
