Samantha was home from college for a brief visit so that she and I could see Cabaret at Theatre Cedar Rapids--I had won tickets from a radio contest. We decided to go out to dinner in North Liberty, since that's on the way to Cedar Rapids.
Samantha had wanted to go to Mirabito's in North Liberty for her birthday, but they had been closed. And, guess what, they were closed again yesterday! We went to a new place instead, The Copper Boar. Burgers, fancy salads, that kind of thing.
While there, in an unusual move for us, we watched the Iowa Women's Basketball game. There wer in the semi-finals of the Big 10 Tournament, and won in a knuckle biter! Piper recently discovered, through the power of pep band, that she MUCH prefers basketball to football. And prefers women's basketball, to boot.
While we were watching the game, the kids threatened to sing the Beer Song ("not until we actually win!" I told them), but agreed we could sing/talk the fight song.
Piper was sitting next to me, and during the song, I thought I heard an...unusual word.
"Wait, you guys know it's 'until the walls and rafters ring,' right?" I asked.
Turns out, Samantha and Piper both thought the word was "raptors," and Piper further thought the full line was "until the wars and raptors ring."
"RAFTERS!" I said. This was hilarious. Apparently I failed them as a former Hawkeye.
"Wait, what did you think 'raptors' meant in this context?"
"I don't know, some kind of sports term?" Piper answered.
"An acceptable answer would have been 'hawks'!"

I enjoyed Cabaret; Samantha like the dancing but not the characters. She gave me the rundown on how this was obviously from the 1978 revival, not the original, which did not feature the emcee as a main character, and Cliff's homosexuality was not a plot point.
