Where would we be without Texas?

This is something I heard on the radio this morning, but I found this on the Houston Chronicle website:

i'll give three cheers for wiping texas off the map! (after my family members have left) (and all of the decent people)

why couldn't texas be more like california and float away into the ocean?!

I seem to remember boucher saying something about how texas is the only state in the union that can secede if it so chooses.

Something about how we aquired the territory from mexico, or something like that. I don't remember exactly.

you have it right... i think: first texas was part of New Spain, then Mexico won independence, (and it was part of Mexico) then Texas won independence, and joined the US as an independent state, "the republic of texas," it was the only state to be acquired that way. so i think it's still weird because of that..... okay. yeah. i'll go now.
