I'm in a weird space right now. Being sick doesn't help, that's for sure. (Apparently my right tonsil is infected! What.) I'll probably make a Serious Post later on, but for now, here are some things recently discovered and enjoyed:
Webcomics
The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and AmalIf you are a fan of stories that are, essentially, about relationships between characters, you should totally look into this. This is a fantastic comic with great art and great characters and great attention to detail. I am totally in love with this comic and the characters and their adventures and I can't wait until I can buy the entire thing hardcopy. (Which, uh, might be awhile, but whatever. At least there's weekly updates! And a ton of little adorable scenes can be found over at
gallo_de_pelea, under the
TJ & Amal tag. It is totally worth your time, I promise.
Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name I love the author's style and I love the characters and I love the weirdness, the supernaturalness that's taken for granted in the universe. AND DID I MENTION THE CHARACTERS <3. AND THE ART, DID I MENTION THAT? Seriously, go check this out. You will not regret it. (Zombies! Werewolves! Vampires! Creepy asshole doctors! ...And listen, I'm speaking as a person who has had more than enough of vampires in pop culture recently. This stuff is good and original and awesome.) Check it out! IT IS TOTALLY RAD
The MeekI love the art here, too. There's political intrigue, nature vs. human expansion (I think?), questions I really want answered, and, uh, shirtless green-haired girls where the point is not at all about the fact that she is shirtless. I'm really excited to see where this goes. My only complaint is that the updates seem to have fallen to once every two weeks instead of once every week.
Evil DivaDo not be led astray by the title! This is not at all about divas, but about Diva, a girl who doesn't really belong in the family she was born to. By which I mean, this comic is about angels and devils going to high school, having familial problems, and the struggle to be as good or evil as you please. The art is outstanding, and I absolutely LOVE Diva's mom right now. Not to mention the interactions between Two Really Old Guys. ♥
Blogs
Sociological ImagesA social commentary built around the images found in Western society (especially the U.S.). Really, really interesting stuff. I have learned more about women used as objects (sometimes literally!) in advertisements than I ever wanted to. And more about the relationship between Africa and primitive-/wildness. And more about gendered products that really shouldn't be gendered. And...
The Sexist, a column by Amanda Hess
Well-written observations about sexism, feminism, rape/sexual assault, and occasionally GLBTQ issues.
Hugo SchwyzerHugo Schwyzer is a feminist. Yes, he's a man. Yes, he's Christian. Yes, he's progressive. Yes, he used to be a narcissistic, sex-addicted asshole. And yes, he's now a parent of a daughter. I absolutely love reading about how all of these things interact and how he makes sense of them. He writes incredibly well about a wide variety of subjects and you can tell he puts a lot of thought into all of it. What attracted me to his blog in the first place was his stance on abortion (i.e., of course women should be able to choose), since that's A Thing with me recently.
GenderforkA site dedicated to the genderqueer people and the normalization of a gender spectrum. There are some tumblr blogs that are probably more popular than Genderfork and do basically the same thing, but I love Genderfork for the quotes and discussions it prompts. And, uh, the fact that it's not quite so sexualized.
Music
MidlakeThey have some really original, slightly Medieval sounding stuff. I mean, I guess I don't really know what Medieval stuff sounds like, but there's something sort of... ancient about it? Acoustic goth rock? I don't know how to describe it, but I like it. I really like
Acts of Man, and really, I haven't heard any song that I disliked.
Charlotte GainsbourgI really really like her music. I do not own any CDs (YET!) but check out this music video for an idea:
Heaven Can Wait.
AND IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW,
MURDER BY DEATH HAS A NEW CD COMING OUT APRIL 6.
And I am always up for new and exciting ways to procrastinate through the form of blogs and webcomics! If you've discovered any new awesomeness, let me know.
