Summary: A short character piece about Galen Tyrol.
Divided
Chief Tyrol is not a man to be second-guessed. When he gives an order, it is followed, or someone will hear about it. Yes, he makes split-second decisions, but never rashly. He has simply learned to think on his feet. A man in his position has to have a clear head under the most chaotic of circumstances.
Today, he is second-guessing himself.
“It’s hard to believe you forgot to check the chamber.”
“I didn’t forget…”
Is this his fault? Did his suspicions and withdrawal drive her to this? He had known Sharon was in trouble. When strange things began to happen to her, she came to him, clung to him, needed him. He wanted more than anything to be there for her. But when it came down to it, he was a man to whom integrity was more important than happiness. An innocent man was rotting in hack because of Tyrol’s feelings for Sharon, and yet, he couldn’t be sure of her anymore. He began to suspect that the strange things happening to her were strange things happening because of her.

Galen Tyrol trusts his instincts. He knows it’s nothing mystical. Instinct is only his subconscious solving a mystery before his consciousness has registered the subtle clues and formed a coherent answer. He is open to the clues around him - observing everything and letting his subconscious do the work. Sometimes his conscious mind never catches up, and he’ll never know why he made the decision he did. But he is seldom wrong, and in the rare instance that he is, he owns up to it.
“I wake up every day wondering who I am. I wake up every day afraid that I’m going to hurt someone.”
His suspicion had been born of instinct. He couldn’t believe she would knowingly collaborate with the Cylons. Not Sharon, not his Sharon. He knew her better than anyone, and he would swear on his life that she was human. She loved him - he knew she did. More than that, she was fighting against the Cylons. Sharon brought back human refugees from Caprica. She cried and had nightmares about leaving Helo behind. She hated the Cylons as much as anyone else. But the blackouts...

Chief Tyrol is not a brilliant man, but he gives himself credit for knowing two things: people and machines. He knows how to get the best out of both. His crew is the best in the fleet, not because he was given the best - no, Galactica had been on her way to the junkyard - but because he makes them the best by understanding the instruction and motivation each one needs. He looks at people and machines in much the same way. Both are intricate and need constant care and attention to be at their very best.
But when it comes to the woman he loves, this complex, challenging woman, he has lost the schematics. He doesn’t know where the broken part is, how to track the short in the wiring.
“You need help.”
“Not from you. You made that perfectly clear.”
He looked at Sharon, skin physically broken and bandaged, and wondered what could be the problem on the inside. It was beyond him. His gift for decision, his instinct and knowledge deserted him when it came to the possibility that his beautiful Sharon could be under Cylon influence. For once, this man of action was utterly stilled.
“Thank you for coming by, Chief. You’re dismissed.”
He almost argued with her, but decisiveness returned to him. Whether she was or wasn’t influenced by the Cylons, she was lost to him for good. He showed his respect the best way he knew how, and hoped the heartbreak didn’t show in his face. He turned and walked away.
