The Sheriff's men seemed to be everywhere. They had destroyed the camp, razed all the stores, rousted all the villagers who had helped the Outlaws in the past. Djaq's mind reeled; she felt as though she had been here before. She did not believe she could survive it, losing everything a second time.

Djaq crouched down in the snow-covered brush, trying to silence even her ragged breathing. She listened for any sound, any hint of the others. For a time, everything was quiet. Then, from the south, she heard the clatter of armor, the pounding of booted feet - the sounds of a chase. She scanned the tree line on the far shore, waiting.

At first sight of him, Djaq softly released the breath she'd been holding. Will.

As he darted through the trees, he glanced over his shoulder, so she knew the Sheriff's men could not be far behind. She whistled sharply, then stood just long enough for him to catch sight of her before ducking down again.

Will was halfway across the frozen river when the Sheriff's men rushed out of the trees behind him. His gaze turned to Djaq's hiding place, and although she couldn't be seen, she could see him and the look of grim determination in his eyes. He slowed his step and reached for his axe.

Djaq froze like the river beneath his feet. It was so risky, what he planned to do. If he didn't make it to the other side of the river before the ice cracked, if the ice didn't crack when he had allowed his pursuers to draw so close... But there was barely a moment to worry before his axe was raised and poised to strike.

His arm stilled and his gaze shifted to the right. Djaq followed his line of sight. Another detatchment of soldiers rushed at him from the northwest bank. He was trapped. Will looked back toward Djaq's blind, the resolute look on his face unchanging, and his arm swung down with force. She looked on in horror as the ice beneath his feet cracked and gave way.

"Shhh. Shhhh," Djaq whispered as Will began to wake. She thought his own violent shaking might have been what stirred him. "It's alright."

"C..cold," he groaned.

"I know," Djaq murmured, snuggling closer to his back and tucking her cloak around him. "I don't dare light a fire. The Sheriff's men are still searching."

"The others?"

The worry in his voice both hurt and touched her. He had barely escaped with his life and his first concern was for their friends. "I don't know," she admitted. "I could not leave you. You would have frozen to death in this cave as surely as in the water."

"We have to find them."

"We will," she assured him. "As soon as we are able." He tried to sit up, but Djaq locked her arms around him and pulled him down. "No, Will. You are still shaking. You have no dry clothes to wear. When the sun comes up, we will go, but for now you must warm yourself."

Djaq began rubbing his shoulders and arms vigorously to warm him. She sensed that he wanted to argue, so she chose to distract him. "When the guards finally left, I was sure you were dead. How did you manage to hold your breath for so long? "

"I didn't," he replied. "I used my knife to thin the ice and widen one of the cracks so I had a space to breathe."

"Brilliant!" Djaq exclaimed, her vigorous rubbing slowing over the firm muscles of his chest. "I cannot remember a moment of such joy as when I saw you climb onto the shore."

"That's how I felt when first saw you hiding on the other side of the river," Will admitted quietly. "I thought you'd been captured back at the camp."

They fell into a thoughtful silence and his shaking began to subside. Unconsciously, Djaq continued to rub circles across his bare skin.

She wondered and worried about the others, but she couldn't help but be glad that Will, at least, was safe. She held him a little tighter and rested her head against his shoulder.

"Djaq," he whispered hazily. "Thank you. You saved my neck, bringing me here."

She smiled as he drifted off to sleep once more, pressing a soft kiss against his skin. "And a beautiful neck it is, Will Scarlett."
