[Batman Beyond] [Gen] [K] Easier Than Bein' Gone

This ficlet was part of The Great Ficlet Project, in which 26 different fandoms were represented, each with a ficlet based on a song lyric provided by my friends list.

Title: Easier Than Bein' Gone
(Julie Roberts lyric, provided by Jennukes)
Genre: Gen
Pairing/Characters: Bruce Wayne
Length: 144 words

In the beginning, Bruce believed it was a really bad idea. Sometimes - times like this - he still thinks so.

When Terry McGinnis stumbled on his secret and urged him to help, he told himself that that chapter of his life was closed. There was no more Batman. When Terry took matters in his own hands, Bruce tried to stop the kid, he really did. But in the end, he just couldn’t let him fail. Seeing through the kid’s eyes (the suit’s visual feed, really), it was almost like he was still out there, still fighting, still winning. Or, days like today, still getting his ass kicked and escaping by the skin of his teeth.

He spent a lifetime inside that suit. Bruce isn’t ready to give up that identity entirely. He isn’t ready to let Batman die.

Living vicariously is easier than being gone.
