[VM] [Gen] [K+] Ghosts in My Room

Jun 22, 2006 15:27

This ficlet was part of The Great Ficlet Project, in which 26 different fandoms were represented, each with a ficlet based on a song lyric provided by my friends list.

Title: Ghosts In My Room
(Blue Rodeo Lyric provided by Pixie_on_acid)
Genre: Gen
Pairing/Characters: Veronica
Length: 240
Spoilers: through Not Pictured

What is the count now? she wonders. She lines up the bottles on the shelf. Eight? Nine? She can’t see clearly to count them, but it’s nearly enough - or rather, it’s nearly the right number. It will never be enough.

One each. One bottle for every innocent person that has died. Veronica eyes the empty bottles, and suddenly imagines them as homes for the ghosts. She giggles and thinks she should decorate them, just like the one on I Dream of Jeannie. Lilly would have liked that - or at least, she wouldn’t have minded the wardrobe. Veronica can just see her now… for a moment, it makes her smile. For a moment.

She twists the top off of another bottle and thinks she really should try again to get an accurate count. She doesn’t want to risk drinking one for Woody Goodman. She wouldn’t want his ghost residing in her room. Nor Aaron Echolls. (While her experience with Sherriff Lamb has taught her not to trust in the law, she believes in justice - and if there is any justice, Mayor Goodman and the famous Mr. Echolls are being eaten by the lowest order of worm.) But one for each of the innocent. She’s not quite there yet, if she wants to include them all. One more for Lucky, she thinks, and just maybe - if she can find it in her heart - one for a boy whose innocence was lost.
