Sam thinks she loves him. She wasn’t sure before.
In fact, back then she believed that she didn’t, couldn’t. Sure, Martin was smart, and kind, and funny, but he was also reserved and private. There was a part of him she couldn’t reach. She was never sure of what he was thinking.
But then she saw him there, in the hospital, looking so broken. His expression was new. Now she understands: what he kept private was his pain. In all the time she’s known him, never before had it shown on his face.
She thinks if she didn’t love him before, it was because she could never believe he needed her.
This is not what he would say, she knows. He would say she didn’t want him because he was kind to her, because he did nothing to feed her insecurities. He sees what is broken in her. He understands her. She wants to understand him.
So, Sam doesn’t push. She tries to show him that she can be caring, that she can be kind. While she looks for what is broken in him, she tries to show him the things in her that aren’t.
