Things Left Behind

John Sheppard was not afraid to die. The choice - blowing up a hive ship and buying some time for Daedalus to arrive versus the sacrifice of his own life - was not a hard one to make.

He didn’t think about the consequences to the expedition. After all, reinforcements had arrived and more were on the way. Another soldier would take his place. With Beckett’s gene therapy, they had enough pilots for the jumpers and scientists to play guinea pig for Rodney’s experiments with Atlantean technology.

He didn’t think about the fact that he would never see Earth again. John had long since resigned himself to that possibility. Truth be told, there wasn’t that much that he missed. There were things he would have enjoyed - pizza and beer, television, new sneakers - but as a military man he was used to long periods without creature comforts. And as far as people, well, his bridges were burned. The only real friends he had were here, in Atlantis.

He didn’t think about the friends he’d leave behind, except that he’d be saving them. When they first encountered the Wraith, John fought because it was his duty - these were his people and protecting them was his job. Now, he did the only thing he could to save them, because they meant that much to him. He knew that Ford and Teyla would understand, and hoped they would help Rodney, who would blame himself for not coming up with another solution.

His only thought as the puddle jumper rose through the stratosphere was that he would never see Elizabeth Weir again. He would never again argue with her, or joke with her, or see her smile. He’d never find out why she hated to be called Liz, or what she was like as a child, or what she thought about when she stood out on the balcony staring out over the ocean. And he’d never have the time to figure out why that thought hurt so much.
