Pavonia pavonia (the Emperor Moth) is really quite beautiful.  It is large and more like a butterfly than many other moths, especially considering its two sets of wings.  Last night I had a rare and sad encounter with it.  Driving home, I heard a distinctive "thud" against my windshield.  Often, insects become embedded in vehicle grills or strike ( Read more... )

Aww, sad. At least the moth's passing was mourned by someone who could appreciate its existence, rather than casually dismissed or unnoticed altogether.

How eloquently put! Sorry you had to put it out of its misery... perhaps the wing fluttering was only a few left-over electrical pulses. The moth no longer felt anything, but its brain had just sent some flutter instructions.
