i was browsing through facebook (how conformist of me!) and found a classmate from high school. we had been on several classes throughout high school and i'd like to think that we were actually friends back then.
so i messaged her to say hey and also to see if she still remembered me. a few message threads later, we added each other's msn handles to continue our conversation. apparently, she's finished with her undergrad and is back in town to bum around whilst looking for a permanent gig. she's working in retail for the meantime to fill the recent-university-grad void. she'd been one of the geekier ones in our batch so i've always pictured her as a future doctor or something - man, was i was way off on that prediction! aside from asking how she's been, we also talked about how our other batchmates are faring in their 'adult' lives. it's interesting to learn that some of the girls i went to high school with have completely changed in a span of five years - in terms of where they are now, what they're doing and if any are married already. we all lead such different lives now. somehow, through all those drooling-over-boys days and stargazing at the sutton place hotel during toronto filmfest and fawning over boybands and defying uniform rules and dodging that god-damn late slip, we've all morphed into a diverse bunch of women. it's really wild to hear the stories of some of the girls because i'm still reconciling their high school selves to their adult selves.
what's even wilder was the fact that she and i were in the same graduation ball last april! and that she was around the same area K and i were seated! kind of odd how i didn't see her, come to think of it. but we concluded that there was just a shitload of people in that hall and we were pretty inebriated by the end that it'd be hard to recognize each other anyway. also, it's hard to imagine high school buddies beyond the kilt-and-polo-shirt ensemble we have lovingly worn for five years, right? we both had a good laugh, though, when we discovered that we were around the same vicinity and didn't even know it! the craziest part was that her ex-boyfriend was the jerk K relentlessly bashed in an email, which circulated within the filipino students' association listserv in their university.
it's funny how the world works. and despite the ginormity of this planet, it truly is a small world. that even high school friends whom you thought you'd never meet after graduation would suddenly pop into your life, only to discover that your lives had almost intersected in a weird way.
