I have two reasons for hating 4th of July weekend: people who take their dogs to see the fireworks & Toby Keith.

1. Why do people think that their dogs want to go see the fireworks? The loud noises are terrifying and the shock of the commotion sends them running. Every year, the shelter gets multiple dogs through the doors (and I imagine that this happens at several shelters around the country). These dogs are victims of human stupidity. If the dog is lucky, the owners will call in within hours of it's disappearance to leave a message for the staff. If the dog is not lucky, it will a)never be found or b)the owner's will never come to get it. As for option b, this could be a good thing-- they would be put up for adoption and given a loving new home. Yes, people make mistakes, but come on.

2. I have the misfortune of only being able to get the signal from country radio stations in at work. Therefore, during 4th of July weekend, I have the displeasure of hearing every station play numerous Toby Keith songs. How many songs can someone write about Merrrkkka being number one without being deemed redundant or full of shit? Better yet, why doesn't anyone see the fact that he is just making money off of everyone's need to be "more patriotic" than their neighbor? I don't get it.

I know that it has been several days since July 4th, but the idiocy still bothers me.

So things are new. I'm currently living with Ryan & our friend Jess. We have a foster dog named Rosie. She is an Australian Cattle Dog mixed with a Jack Russell Terrier. She is sweet, but we are working on some issues that she has with other animals, bicycles, scooters, and skateboards. We've named our house the Monkey Wrench House. We won't be here for much longer. As much as I hate moving every year, my disappointment with Hanover is growing.

At the moment, we are attempting to put together a reading/art space for people to use once a week on Saturdays. Coffee and assorted foods will be available as well as the ability to read our books, watch documentaries, write & play music, and create art. This is still in the process of happening, so I won't be negative about it yet.

I feel like this town is stuck. The majority of people are so stagnant that it is unbearable. We had a free market, the 4th one, and people still don't get it. Either the greed takes over or people assume I'm running a charity. I want to create a community. The point is to have members of the community come out and bring their own items. To speak to one another and create bonds and mutual aid. Instead, people come out and take a car load of items--normally I don't care, the problem is that I feel as though they are taking it because it is free, not because they want or need it. My feelings were confirmed 3 days later when I was driving by the home of one of the people who lived just a few houses down from where the free market was held. A tube lamp with an ocean scene on it was sitting out by the curb. I know that this lamp worked because I had tried it myself before putting it out at the free market. Aside from greedy market-goers, people would come and drop off their unwanted goods and then leave without speaking a word.

Trying to be positive feels like such a useless effort. All attempts at something great are met with cynicism and violent words. I shouldn't be too harsh because there are some people here that think certain things are good, but again, they don't get it. They still fear other races and persons that they don't understand. Anything that is for the community is usually done by the church, anything outside of the church is looked at with suspicion. Almost all of the kids here are apathetic toward everything, for example, we handed them a show flier and they lit it on fire in front of us while their group of friends cackled away at our disturbed faces. I guess I just don't understand. The entire town complains about the lack of entertainment, the newer generation of kids becoming junkies, the urbanization of our town, etc, etc. Yet, when something new or different arrives, the newcomers are met with scorn and ridicule. The people with the complaints are those that are facilitating the problems.

To get on a better subject, things really aren't that terrible. With every annoying encounter, we experience such magnificent things. Friendships are strong and laughter is constant. With love & solidarity, we will overcome this town or create something great elsewhere.

Resistance is fertile.
