By the time Jack gets to the Others’ camp, nobody uses note cards to spell out the hierarchy for him, but nobody has to: he can feel it in every subtle move that Juliet makes, the network of invisible threads holding this place together.
“How can you go on like this?” he rages to her, “Worrying about every move you make, doing everything out of fear?”
When he touches her side, she looks up at him like he’s just broken her best china, and he can’t help wonder if this will work, this replacing one kind of tension with another.
