Observation #127

People are ridiculous when it comes to any sort of technology.

I shot a wedding this past Saturday and the groom's father asked me how many mega pixels my camera was. I froze solid with thoughts racing through my head - should I tell the truth, or should I lie? I stammered a bit as I thought, probably making me look like an idiot.

I use the d70, which is a 6.1 MP camera. It's a GOOD camera and gives very good results - especially for wedding photography. The problem is that consumer grade P&S cameras have been coming out with higher MPs, and consumers stupidly eat it up thinking that MP is the end all be all of the camera's quality.

They don't consider the physical size of the sensor, or the quality of the lens. Although the MPs of consumer grade cameras have been increasing, I swear the image quality has been decreasing. My first digital camera back in 2000 was a 1MP and it took amazing, crisp photos. Consumer cameras can't do that these days.

I was afraid he'd look at me in horror if I told him I was using a 6.1MP camera as he held his 10MP P&S in his hand. I didn't want to have to save face by trying to explain to him the technical details about sensor size and lens quality.

And so... I told him I had a 12MP camera.
