"Some people'd say training outside in winter isn't really sane," Riku commented as he drew closer, walking over to where Mulan was stretching and noting the training gear set out in the churned snow. Seeing as how they were both in the same year and house, Riku remembered Mulan from his first four years at school. They'd even partnered up a few times for class.

More importantly, if he didn't do something, he'd probably go stir-crazy inside the castle. He offered the girl a hand up.

"Need a sparring partner?"

Mulan glanced up as Riku stopped before her and smiled. She recognized her old housemate from the years before, granted he had of course grown over his absence. They all had, really. Time truly did slow for no one. When he spoke, his voice a bit deeper than before, she couldn't help but laugh in response to his remark, "I've heard worse."

Taking his hand, she stood up with ease and dusted off her clothes. No sense in letting what snow had gotten attached to them seep in, though she could stand both the cold and water that came with it. Taking a better look at Riku, she noted his indifferent air and, on closer inspection, the apparent boredom. Shaking her head, she grinned.

"Well, I wouldn't turn one down."

"Then you just got one."

Riku smiled and glanced over at the gear scattered on the ground. "How much of a warm up do you usually do?"

"Before a spar, just enough to loosen up the muscles and get ready. If I'm training, then there's that plus a whole routine," she noted, following his gaze. She had been planning on just training, then Riku had caught her at the end of her first warm up. Glancing at the weapons, a though struck her. She had no idea what style he'd prefer to spar in.

"Did you want to go hand to hand or use weapons? Or a mix?"

"I usually mix," Riku admitted. Even during playfights with the other local children, it usually never stayed one or the other for too long. "More realistic that way, right?"

Taking off his cloak and outer robes, Riku started stretching. It was a good thing he'd dressed for comfort today in a battered old shirt and well-worn trousers and boots. It was chilly, but not unbearable with the sun out.

She nodded, with a grin. That was the style she preferred to use, too, the one she had learned worked best for her. You never knew what was going to come up and, while it was fun to attempt and train in just one method, in a real situation you didn't have the luxury of being able to defend yourself upon a strict manner.

"Same here," Mulan noted, slipping out of the sweatshirt she had donned that morning along with her usual training attire. She went through a few more simple stretches as she waited for her new partner to finish his own warm up.

Finishing up, Riku sprang to his feet and nodded. "Ready?"

He walked over to the pile of training gear and hefted a practice sword. It was a little lighter than he was used to, but it had good balance. "Can I borrow this?"

"If it suits you, then sure," she agreed, choosing one for her own use. She always kept a small supply of training items, just in case something broke beyond a repair spell or someone else wanted to use them.

Walking a bit away, she took up a position and called out, "Ready when you are!"

Riku smiled and dropped into his own stance. The melting snow was going to be a challenge, but he was confident he could still move pretty freely in it. "Ladies first."

Mulan bit back a retort and laughed at his reply. It wasn't the first time she had heard that one, far from it, but for some reason it excited her to hear that the spar was about to begin. Though she started the session off not expecting to do much other than her usual paces, refining her maneuvers, the idea to train against a new opponent who was also an old friend, at least an old acquaintance, was exciting.

"You asked for it," she teased, dropping her posture slightly as she ran forward - her steps light upon the ground, direction clear - giving off the first blow.

Riku jumped back as the slice came towards him, parrying the blow with a swing of his own. "Not bad," he called with a hint of a smirk, swinging his sword back towards her in reverse.

He'd have to be careful, a corner of his mind whispered, but no, this was just a spar. A sword fight. Nothing Dark about it. Even if Mulan was a girl and he'd probably be more lenient than otherwise.

"As are you," she called out with a grin, jumping slightly to the left in order dodge his own swing. She then tucked into a roll and gracefully lept a bit away, putting some more distance between them to better gauge his reactions.

Mulan may of been a girl, but her gender held no reference to her skills or abilities. She had a fair deal of life experience behind her.

"Been at this long?" Riku commented, his casual tone belying the way his eyes followed her movement. She was quick, he'd give her that. Although if it came down to it, Riku could be fast, too. Barely waiting until she'd completed her roll, Riku ran forward, swinging his sword down testingly.

Surprised by Riku's sudden movement, she barely had time to roll to the right at the very last second and dodge his swing, bits of iced mud splattering the side of her face as she did so. Leaping a bit away she gauged his movements and grinned, staying ready to move when necessary. This would be an interesting spar.

"Long at what exactly?" she asked, still keeping a keen eye on her opponent as they talked.

"Fighting. You seem pretty used to it-- for a girl," Riku added teasingly. He swept his leg out in a roundhouse kick, following her dodge, ready to pull it back, just in case.

"Just for a girl?" she inquired, amused. She was used to individuals teasing, some literally underestimating her due to her gender. That particular notion was quickly proven false.

As he swept his leg out, she blocked his kick with ease, catching it and pushing him a bit away. She then followed up the movement with a sweep of her own leg to trip him up.
