Even now, with the decision already made, Zak was conflicted about asking for help in Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was definitely putting in extra effort he wouldn't have bothered with a few short weeks ago-and for what? His grades? Like that mattered ( ... )

Lilith was watching a spider build a web in a forgotten corner of the room when Zak arrived. The silk was difficult to see to the naked eye, if one did not know how to look. She tilted her head just so in order to observe. It threaded an intricate, beautiful pattern, a trap of shimmering, impossibly thin lines.

Zak's voice shook her out of her reverie, and she glanced up and smiled, open. It was not too difficult for her to appear friendly, when she had a desire to do so. "Ah. Hello, Zak." She paused, then gestured over to the empty chair near her own. "Please, sit down. Did you have any trouble finding the room?"

Zak smiled back, relieved that she was in a good mood. "Hi, Lilith. Thanks for coming to meet me." He bounded forward with the energy-of a first-year, making an unnecessary show of jumping onto the chair.

"Nah, it was pretty easy. I'm getting better at figuring this place out. Took a shortcut to get here." It was true. There were still countless secrets the castle had managed to withhold from him, but Zak was more educated than most on the layout of the castle. Sneaking around in underused passageways and secret rooms had had that effect, although as of late he was doing more of it...within the bounds of reason.

Lilith watched him, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Children were so needlessly exuberant. Energy expended without purpose was useless.

"A shortcut?" Her voice lilted at the last syllable, making it obvious she was interested. "I remember those...I found quite a few in my earlier years here. Hogwarts has many secrets, if you are willing to look." The passageways were advantageous as well -- knowing paths others did not afforded opportunities to hide, to withhold information.

"Now." Lilith reached in her robes to find her wand and set it neatly on the table. "We should begin. First...what would you like to learn, and why?"

"You did?" asked Zak, more than a little surprised. He hadn't though Lilith would have been interested in things like secret passages when she was his age. She seemed more like someone who would have actually studied, or at least not broken any rules.

He smiled, but it faded just as quickly when they reached the subject of actual learning. "Well...I'm doing pretty bad in Defense Against the Dark arts and Transfiguration. But probably I want to work on DADA first, because..." He swallowed. "Just because of all the stuff that's been going on this year, and, you know. It's probably a good thing to learn."

SO AM I... veiledviper January 1 2011, 03:30:49 UTC
"Mm." She smiled, a bit self-depreciatingly, and stood gracefully to her feet. "I know it seems hard to believe, from someone like me...but there was a time where I did quite a few things that fell...outside of notice from the professors." Those had been the days when she had believed that the value of a human being was forged in their blood, a right given to them at birth. She knew better, now. Humans were valueless, worthless, until they proved otherwise. "You would be surprised at what I know." Her smile widened, a fraction, and then gradually faded as Zak began to speak.

"I see." She studied him carefully for a moment, and then tilted her head, considering. "I can assist with both. However," and here she paused for a moment, before speaking again, "it will not be easy. Are you prepared for that?"

Zak stared at her, almost uncomprehending. Lilith? Rulebreaker? It just didn't fit. Slowly a smile worked its way back onto his face. "Really? Like what kinds of things did you do?" He wondered for a moment what else he didn't know about the seventh-year that might throw him for a loop....

Again, his smile faltered at her next words, but instead of hesitating, he looked her in the eye. "Yeah. I am. I've got to stop fooling around, you know? This stuff is important. I want to be able to protect people, but how can I do that if I-"

He paused a moment, flinching involuntarily, but then returned his gaze as levelly as before. "-if I can't protect myself?"
