Two more suddenly appeared around the bend where she had been heading, miserable looking creatures who moaned and drooped and -- and saw them, and suddenly there was a hungry fire lighting their eyes and speeding their footsteps.
Her first instinct was to run, but Sakura was here. And she would never abandon a friend who might be in trouble, nevermind that Sakura could handle herself just fine.
And you know what? Kairi could too. She gripped her wand with a determined flex of her fingers, and look at that, her arm was only just barely shaking. "I can help too," She replied firmly. "Professor Farron has been teaching us--" And she focused, collecting her will, and sent her magic out in one big push at one of the approaching zombies. Her healing spell hit is full-force and it... paused, it's skin suddenly seeming to bloat outward in sickening proportions, and then... the moving corpse seemed to simply collapse in on itself, skin turning to liquid and rotting organs and bones falling to the ground.

The explosion didn't quite rocked the hallway, but it was enough to force Sakura back a step or two. "Oh good, they work," she murmured, before turning back to Kairi and whatever she had--
"...That's disgusting," Sakura announced, recognising the spell her young apprentice had used and its effects. "It melted! That's so awful." Shaking her head, she set her face again, disapproving. 'And you could have healed three people with the magic it took to kill one zombie," she pointed out flatly.

She could do this.
Even if she didn't have nifty exploding things like Sakura, at least... at least her spells worked. Although Sakura's words made her droop. "Well... " actually, Sakura was completely right. Spells like that would drain her magic all-too fast, and then what good would she be if she came upon someone injured? "...Yeah. I know. You're right."
A pause.
"I've been working on fire spells, too."

I've been working on fire spells, too.
Sakura paused, then, and looked over a Kairi, a considering expression on her face. Then she sighed, the look softening into a wry smile. She wasn't going to win this fight unless she dragged Kairi back to the Hospital Wing, and she didn't have the time to do that. And honestly...maybe this was something that Kairi needed. Sakura wouldn't be the one to stand in the way of that.
So it was that with a decisive nod, she started pulling vials from her primary medkit. "Okay. Okay. But find a buddy as soon as you can, and watch your back. Save your energy for healing, if you can - in the meantime, you can use these. This one causes paralysis, this one is liquid fire, and this one is the one that I just u--you know what?" She unclipped the pack from her belt and handed it over. "Just take the whole thing. It's got a bag of holding charm on it, so you shouldn't run out any time soon, but if you do you have to promise me you'll go back to the Hospital Wing? Sound like a fair compromise?"

When Sakura's expression softened, something in her heart eased, a phantom pressure leaving off that Kairi had not even known was there. She knew before Sakura even spoke that it was all right, that she could keep going. She wasn't sure what had changed her Senpai's mind, but she was grateful.
She took the vials as Sakura handed them to her, nodding to show she was listening and trying to shuffle carrying them and her wand without dropping anything, when abruptly Sakura changed tactics on her and handed over her entire pack. Kairi took it, bemused, staring up at her Senpai worriedly over full arms. "But don't you need it?"

She glanced up again, still smiling, her voice somehow light. "I promise. You too, okay? You come back too." There was a poignant pause, as if Kairi was struggling to say something else, her hand slipping into one of the pockets on her skirt. After a moment, she gave up, and wordlessly reached out to take Sakura's hand and pull it up, palm flat up. Her other hand pressed something small and precious into Sakura's palm and held it there for a brief moment.
"...This is my lucky charm, okay?" She drew in another breath. "So I'll still be with you. You have to be sure to bring it back to me."

"No, thank you, Kairi. I'll do better if I can be relatively sure you'll eventually be safe." She nodded once, determined. "I'll definitely be back, okay? I'm going to meet Catty now, the two of us are going to kick zombie butt."
She might have said more, but the pause that fell after her words seemed heavy, laden with some sort of emotion that she was reluctant to break. And then Kairi pressed something into her palm and spoke again, and Sakura felt her eyes widen, mouth opening slightly in surprise. Her fingers twitched slightly against Kairi's hand then, as if she would grab it and not let go, but she resisted the urge and instead took the charm, tying it carefully around her wrist and blinking away tears before they actually had a chance to fall.
That done, she leaned forward and pulled Kairi into a hug and held her there for a moment, before letting go and kissing her on the cheek. "I'll definitely bring it back to you," she swore. "And now I have to run before Catty gets started without me. Stay safe, and good luck."

Just like Sakura, she could not... would not just stand to the side this time. She had to act, had to do something other than watch everyone fight for her. Even though she was terrified, even though it would have been much easier to hide in the hospital wing... couldn't. Not this time.
She hugged Sakura back fiercely, closing her eyes. Her Senpai would be alright. Sakura had to be all right. When she pulled back and kissed Kairi on the cheek, Kairi felt her skin warm slightly, though she was smiling as widely as she could. "Good," She replied firmly, swallowing around the lump that had risen in her throat. "I'll... I'll see you."
