As Queen Ashelia leads the students into town, dressed in full battle garb, the guards gather closely around the group as they head for Lowtown. It's a whole other city underneath the Upper Stratum, though nowadays it's used only for its original purpose; as warehouses rented out to merchants for storage space. The group goes even deeper, though, into the Garamsythe Waterway.

Each student is given a map of the Waterway. You all have six hours to seek out and defeat the Esper Cuchulainn in battle, with the help of your fellow students should you wish it, and your guards ( ... )

Rinoa had waited out to see if she could gather more people to join her team in the hunt... but it turned out that most everyone already gathered and seemed a little too crowded. She wasn't worried though. Her group was awesome, and they had their guards with them to... so... they'll be fine.

She kept the map and asked her guards to see if they had any information about the Waterway that wasn't already given. For the most part, Rinoa played the part of navigator and held her wand out with a spell cast to light their path better. "You know... that outfit the professor was wearing was cute, don't you think?"

Lucy had stuck close to Rinoa, but allowed the other girl to keep a slight lead, knowing full well her strengths did not lay in close range combat. Honestly she was not quite as certain about this mission as Rinoa was, but the presence of the guards was a comfort, as was the belief that their teacher would not have sent them into any serious danger.

Rinoa's lighthearted chatter helped ease Lucy's nerves though, and she had embraced the conversation. "It was, especially her skirt." Though said skirt had been a bit shorter than Lucy had expected.

When it came to the close range combat, Rinoa stuck behind her guards and let them handle that. Already she trusted their skills and judgment completely... and there also was the reassurance about the situation not being too dangerous. It would seem that Rinoa are on the same page on that!

Rinoa did think the skirt was a little short, but she only wrinkled her nose a moment instead of commenting on it. "I love the shirt with how it's split in the back like coat tails." As she continued to check the map at each cross section, she continued on with the chatting. Talking about the banquet, about the orphanage that she had heard of the night before, about the really cool bathrooms they had... and the rooms, omg, AND THE VIEW, and at one point she brought the conversation onto boys, and especially on the couple of boys that have been giving her grief lately. She pretty much talked about anything except for their assignment and where they were right now ( ... )

Lucy was mostly content to let Rinoa do the talking, though that's not to say she was silent, just that she generally let the other girl decide which ways to steer the conversation. Rinoa was refreshingly normal in her interests, with a view of the world that was endearing in its openness and honesty. She loved her friends back at Hogwarts, but sometimes it was nice to just talk about clothes and dancing and other topics that teenage girls were supposed to talk about. Beyond that, Rinoa proved she was very insightful, and Lucy found herself asking a number of questions about the orphanage in particular ( ... )

This looks like the beginnings of an awesome friendship because Rinoa is always content with being the one doing the talking. She'd like a conversation, but chatting away with little input doesn't seem to be a problem at all for her since she always has plenty to say. She didn't voice how she wondered why it took this long for her to spend time with Lucy. It was surprising that it took this sort of situation for her to start being friends. Because that is what she is thinking this is. Them becoming friends ( ... )

Lucy seemed a bit flustered by Rinoa's question, realizing she hadn't exactly reacted to the rat attack like a normal girl would have. "My friend Erza thought I should know how to defend myself." Of course, that explanation didn't actually address why she'd chosen to use those skills, but Lucy had not wanted to dwell too long on the possibility that growing up with Erza, Natsu, and Gray might have rubbed off on her.

Lucy did not want to have to stay in the sewers too long, so as long as opening the gate won't cause any problems then that was the plan she supported. How would they open it?

"Ah." Rinoa tilted her head and noticed Lucy looked a bit embarrassed and tried to help her out in one of the only ways she knew how to help. "That's kind of the same reason that I joined the self defense club... but I haven't learned anything there like that." Erm. She glanced off, her mind trailing off for a bit. "I better hope I never get cornered in an alley by a rat or else I'll be in trouble ( ... )

"Don't worry, if that happens the best thing to do is give them a nice strong kick to the snout." Lucy had paused, then with a giggle added, "The same policy works with boys who don't know what no means."

Lucy, having no chance whatsoever of wiggling through that gate, had been content to let Rinoa go for it, but when it soon became clear that even she was having trouble. "Hold on, I have an idea." She pulled out a small silver key, and with an incantation, she called on the spirits to open the gate of the dog causing a swirl of light and the sound of a lock clicking open. When the display finally ended, a small creature stood on the other side of the grate shivering.

"Here, just lift Plue up, so he can pull it down."

Rinoa chuckled once before she commented on Lucy's policy. "Actually I find that when words don't work..." She turned enough so she could hold up a hand, fingers curled and a smirk on her face. "A few scratches helps to get them to listen." Not that she's had to do that often. But sometimes... desperate times call for desperate measures ( ... )

Now Lucy hand to laugh out of both amusement and female solidarity of having had to deal with self important boys. "That is a classic, though you have to make sure he's bad enough to be worth ruining your nails for."

Lucy had scratched the back of her head to hide how pleased she was with Rinoa's complement. "Oh, I'm still a relative amateur, but I promise I'm going to keep getting better!"

Lucy had watched in amazement as Plue hovered off the ground, the dog...bug...carrot...thing having reveled in his new flight, letting out a happy "Puuuu" as he was raised up just enough to pull the lever, releasing the grate. Lucy had cheered in triumph, and given her summon a congratulatory hug, telling him how awesome he was, before complementing Rinoa on her floating spell.
