She heard footsteps coming from down the hall but she paid no real attention to them as she noticed her quill start to slide off the monstrous pile of books she held in her hands. She bit her lower lip, tried to shift the weight so it rolled back into place, and instead managed to have the top two texts fall off with the damn thing.
With an annoyed huff she bent down, setting aside her stack of homework to pick up her books as well as retie the bootlace that had been driving her crazy for the past twenty minutes or so.

And the noise and laughter and fun that was following the grundy run around the school had definitely been part of the plan. None of the teachers had started handing out detentions yet, though from the glared Professor Kuchiki sent his way as he'd run past, Jim was sure one wouldn't be too far away.
All in all, things were going pretty well.
...and as he rounded the corner and caught sight of a certain girl oblivious to the madness going on, he changed his mind and decided things were probably about the best that they could be. Ever.
He strolled over, trying to keep from grinning like a dork at his unexpected good luck. He stopped right in front of her and probably far too close for comfort- but James Kirk never turned down opportunity when it came knocking.
"Need a hand?" he asked casually.

Shaking her head to clear her thoughts she returned to the task at hand. Jaina registered the sound of footfalls approaching her but paid the noise no heed. Hogwarts was a large school, after all, it wasn't uncommon for someone to be roaming around.
She had just finished tying the double knot when she heard an all too familiar voice.
"I'll manage," she murmured, not even looking up as she began to reach for her fallen books.
Reply
Oh wait- this was Jaina. Of course she wouldn't look up.
Recovering in record time, and with only the hesitant pause, Jim grinned afresh and tried again. He was not letting this chance go without a fight. Especially if that meant fighting against Jaina's unbelievable tendency to not follow the script.
Jim crossed his arms. "Being here for you includes helping you pick stuff up too you know. It's an all inclusive deal."
Reply
"I can pick up the books by myself just fine," she muttered darkly, snapping the texts down on top of each other with a pointed echo.
This wasn't a script and she wasn't going to be falling for any lines.

"I can see that." he said, trying to keep his frustration out of his voice.
"You're pretty talented."
Reply
"I do what I can," she said, annoyance dripping from every syllable, "Next I'll be able to hold open my own doors and pay for my own meals."
She finished placing her books in order, but instead of looking up she just sat there glaring petulantly at Making Hexes the Druce Frampell Way: Fighting Dark Arts in Modern Times as if it was the thing testing her patience.

"It was a joke, alright." he stated bluntly, trying to ignore the urge to just keep pushing. (Pushing was what Jim usually did. Though usually meant in the vicinity of a bar, with a few too many drinks and other guys who looked like they were after a fight.)
But, as Jim was trying so hard to remind himself, he wasn't trying to fight Jaina.
Probably.
"It wouldn't hurt to take things less seriously every once in a while."
Reply
"And I have to take things seriously. I feel like I'm the only one who does," her words escalated in volume, not quite yelling but definitely not being calm either. This week had been hell for her, and the last thing she needed was Kirk pushing all the right buttons, "I'll be less serious when you stop being a scruffy looking, half witted, nerf-"
She looked up to meet his stare.
She met something else entirely.
What the hell was she staring at?!
Reply
-then she stopped and stared... at his crotch?
And Jim remembered where he'd been trying to get to in the first place, and grinned ridiculously again. But covered up the grin pretty quickly again, because ridiculous was not a look that suited James Kirk.
Not that Jaina would have noticed at that particular minute.
"Who's scruffy looking?" he asked, trying to sound as hurt and insulted as possible. It was difficult, what with the stunned look she was giving him.

And then another second or two to realize that Kirk wasn't wearing anyhting but a pair of tighty whities and a pair of running shoes.
And by the time those seconds had passed it dawned upon her that she had been staring for a time period that was of a very inappropriate length regarding said area of staring and the amount of clothes Kirk wasn't wearing.
She felt her cheeks burn. She felt her temper flare.
First things first.
Eyes glued to the ceiling, Jaina managed to stand up and grab a hold of all of her school supplies. She inhaled, swerved on her heel to face the opposite direction, and grumbled between clenched teeth.
"You're an idiot."
A pause.
"Why aren't you wearing pants."

But the day he'd come up with the idea of a grundy run... he'd been a genius genius.
Seeing Jaina this flustered- it was good to know she wasn't completely immune to his charms. Her eyes shooting up to look at the ceiling and staying there once she'd gotten up- was very, very cute and rather endearing.
Not that he should tell her that.
Jaina had her pride after all.
"Does it matter?" he asked innocently, grinning at her tense shoulders.

"I don't even want to know what you're doing. Just make sure you're dressed before a professor spots you and takes away even more house points from Slytherin," she said, proud of herself beyond all belief that her tone was even and composed despite her cheeks being red.
And with that, Jaina started walking away. Quickly.

Luckily, however, Jim had anticipated this and it took him only a few seconds to catch up to her side as she stalked away.
You're getting predictable, Jaina. Jim thought distractedly.
"You don't want to go this way." he remarked off-handedly as they hastened together along the corridor.

It wasn't so much the underwear that bothered her, although it played a factor, as it was her own feelings of frustration and fluster. Her issues revolving around the growing...sentiments towards him were difficult to decipher on a good day and the fact that he was prancing around like a kriffing advertisement only-
She stopped her train of thought at the word 'kriffing'. And frowned. The other life was still making its mark on her. She exhaled.
Ignore him. He'll go away.
Even as she told herself that, almost immediately her mind followed up with:
Yeah right. Stubborn ass.

But, not being privy to Jaina's every thought, Jim couldn't correct her. He settled on teasing her a little more,
"If this is how you react seeing one guy in his undies," he teased, knowing full well that Jaina wouldn't have reacted this strongly to just anyone. "I'd hate to see what you'd do when the rest of the guys come back along here."
