Howl looked at all the younger children and smiled. "Today we will be starting with spell basics. Some of you may know this already, but it is an essentially part of theory. Several things are needed in order to create a spell to begin with. Can anyone tell me what one of things things are?"

Ruby glanced around. Not many of the first years seemed to be willing to volunteer any answers right off the bat.
He didn't really like the idea of answering the first question (what if he got branded as the smart one? He'd never be able to slack off if he wanted to!), but on the other hand, the allure of the spotlight called to him. Inevitably, Ruby's hand rose into the air.

Toph had walked into class, not very excited that this particular professor had returned to torment her. Why the headmaster made this a required class was beyond her. She had already come up with two spells on her own. It had taken a lot of work and practice, but she had a very good grasp on them now, and she was even thinking of other spells she could come up with.
Ignoring the class, she let the little first year answer the question, and leaned back in her seat to plop her bare, grime covered feet on her desk.

Not sharing in the instructor's enthusiasm, Ciel remained silent from his vantage point. Patience wasn't always his strong suit. Ideally, the professor would just skip the question and answer bit and just get down to the material. Ciel had both elbows propped on the table, hands clasped together, looking more than a little bored.

"Bei Fong, feet down," he said quickly before turning to Ruby. "Very good, Carmine. That is one, can anyone else tell me another?" His glanced around the room, particularly at the unenthusiastic second years.

Ciel smiled slightly, which was in itself a rarity. He couldn't help but find the exchange between Toph and the professor rather amusing. It seemed like he wasn't the only one tiring of this class.

The tiniest of smirks played at the corner of Howl's mouth. While Toph's brash manner would come as an offense to some, Howl hardly paid it any mind. "Yes, while it is true we need a wand, it is also possible to perform magic without one. Our very own school's librarian performs magic without one every day." Oh, while it was true that Sophie was a special case, he didn't see the need to say anything more on that subject.
"We have incantation and wand, can anyone else give me another necessity?"

Ruby winced. That second-year girl was loud. He had glanced behind him to see her feet, her dirty, grimy, bare feet only inches away from his head. Seriously, was she even civilized? He had been glad to see those feet come off the desk.
He settled for making a face to himself and doodling in the margin of his paper while waiting for the next answer.

To answer Ruby's question, she has no wish at all to be civilized.blindearthgirlNovember 4 2009, 23:26:49 UTC
Toph didn't react to Pendragon's answer, though she'd have to talk to the librarian and ask her how she did any magic without a wand. It certainly must be a great advantage during a duel.
She had her feet crossed Indian-style now, balancing on her chair. She continued to pick some dirt from her feet, and sensing that the student didn't like it very much, flicked a bit of it at their head. She liked to cause trouble.
If the professor was still waiting for answers it looked like it was going to be a long wait. Stifling a yawn, Ciel rested his head on his hands and went back to ignoring his fellow students. Really, what was the point in dragging this out?
"Bei Fong, I'd like to ask you to stop or I will request that you wear shoes from now on," he smirked, knowing full well how she would feel about that. He made a mental note to give her detention with one more, perhaps she could use it.
"Nothing more?" he shook his head. Despite his less-than-enthusiastic crowd, his mood was far from dampened. "We already have incantation and wand, how about the correct wand motions? If we do not have the correct motions, our spell can go awry. There's one more, though." He scanned the room, eyes falling on Ciel. "Phantomhive, do you know the answer?" he asked, picking on the quietest, most unamused student of the lot.
((I know he asked for Ciel, but lets keep order here~ Not nice to leave anyone out :D))
Toph sent a scowl in Pendragon's direction before responding to Ruby with a small burp. She didn't care if he thought she was gross. She knew she was gross.
She leaned forward and started tracing the keys on her typewriter with her finger. She'd rather be in Auron's class than this place, and she hated that guy.
A sigh escaped Ciel's lips as if the inquiry was a grand inconvenience. Lowering his hands to rest on the table he decided to reply with the first thing that came to mind, "What? Don't you know the answer?". His tone was flat and dry, deadpan even.
Perhaps that had been an unwise decision on his part, oh well. He wasn't exactly in the best mood, and apparently felt like sharing it.
There were two things Howl hated most and those were unpleasant things and questions. Why he had been learning to tolerate most questions as a Professor, this particular one he did not deem worthy, as it were far from unpleasant and riddled with disrespect. Anyone else would have given the student a detention on the spot, Howl however, would not.
"The ability to perform magic," he continued as if Ciel had said nothing. "Without the ability to perform magic we cannot perform spells. Of course, you wouldn't be here then," he smiled wryly. "A muggle and a squid could take that wand of yours and wave it till kingdom come, but without a magical they will be little more than an idiot waving a stick

"An incantation?" he suggested.

Oh, oh, just.....ew!
He whirled around and shot the girl a glare; upon noticing that Howl had moved to address Phantomhive, he hissed, "Quit it! You're so gross!"
