Shunsui, ever the gentleman, arrived at Nanao's door precisely at the arranged time. He knew proper date etiquette after all, and it typically dictated that the man arrived on time and the woman took between ten minutes to an hour to finish getting ready. Of course, there was nearly nothing typical about Nanao. Shunsui smiled softly, a rather dopily happy glazed look coming into his expressive eyes. If anyone would have seen him, though, those eyes would have been shadowed by the wide brim of his hat. A man had to hide his weak points, you see. Shunsui sighed, not a heavy, dramatic sigh of despair, but one more akin to the sigh of a dreamer staring up at the clouds. No, nothing typical about Nanao at all. She was intelligent, and beautiful, and she resisted him. At first her resistance had been something to play with, a fun game for him to see if he could win her over

Nanao jumped at the sight of a ghostly arm appearing on her side of the door, followed soon after by the sound of Shunsui's voice. It irritated her (there must be more gentlemanly ways to announce one's presence!) though as he could not knock, she decided not to mention it.
Her heart, which had been fluttering nervously before, began to race and she swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. "I- I'm coming." she called, when she was absolutely certain that she was completely under control. There- there was no good reason for her to be this nervous, so it definitely would not do for himto get the wrong idea about anything.
She took a deep breath, telling herself that she could do this. Yes. Yes- she did want to go and spend an evening with him. Even though he was loud, and ridiculous, and unexpected... and despite her hesitation and her fear and everything else Nanao wanted to spend time with him and find out more about him

"Ah," was all the normally implacable ghost could think to say, blinking stupidly for several moments after Nanao walked through the door. Shunsui was generally a very bright man, quick thinking, if lazy, and capable of solving a wide and impressive variety of problems when he put his mind to it, but as soon as Nanao appeared on the other side of the door without opening it first, he felt as though his brain had stopped working entirely. For a moment, at least

Stop that! Nanao ordered herself as she found herself nervously twiddling her thumbs together. So what if he was staring at her like that? It was only because she'd surprised him.
As he leant down to her (how he was still so much taller than her as a ghost, she couldn't understand) she braced herself for the worst. She wasn't sure she could do this. Despite herself Nanao met his eyes and was momentarily confused by the familiar twinkle she saw there

It was both unexpected and entirely predictable, being hit in the face by Nanao. As it was, Shunsui hopped back, large hand raised to cover his face, eyes staring at her mournfully over it in what amounted to possibly the most pitiful expression any man had ever made at a woman
( ... )
Nanao was not so cold as to be unmoved by the mournful look on Shunsui's face, but she had enough self control not to show it. At least one of them had to be an adult about this... thing, and for now it looked like it would have to be her.
She patiently endured his dramatics, trying not to think of him as an overeager puppy. His comment about being serious... unsettled her for a moment. More than she wanted to admit, truth be told. But Shunsui continued despite it, and the not all that unwelcome flutterings in her stomach were soon quelled. She still hadn't completely figured him out yet, to her analytical and orderly mind's dismay. But she was working on it, and it didn't mind him nearly so much now as she had once.
Nanao frownned to hide her sudden blush, but took the proffered arm. "You look ridiculous when you do that." she said sternly, trying not to think about how small and delicate her hand looked in the crook of his elbow. "And if I stay in, you will not be staying with me."
Shunsui beamed as Nanao took his arm, his smile just charming enough to avoid smugness. It was an expression he'd perfected hundreds of years before Nanao was born, a glimmer of flirtatiousness in his eyes, a promise of fun in the tilt of his lips. Few women had ever been able to resist it. That Nanao had resisted, more than once, was more intriguing than disappointing. It only made him more determined to get past her defenses

No. She was not thinking about that. At all.
