"I doubt that the two of you will find anything of interest here. But." He paused, a smirk playing on his lips as he set the guitar down beside the desk. He stood, making a quick motion with his hand to the expanse collection of text shelved behind him. They were not there because Daryan loved to read, oh no. They were there because Daryan thought it made him look a bit more professional, .. &they hadn't another home. Some of them, however; did, in fact, belong to him. He had attended Hogwarts after all. Mystery & Crime novels were among the ones that populated most of the top shelf. Older textbooks followed suite. Beneath that was a very varied group of novels ( both fiction and non ) and of course, more textbooks. That particular batch was not his per say, but his mother and father's. Now, unfortunately, they belonged to him. "Both of you are more than welcome to look."
Daryan looked down at the calendar on top of his desk, his eyes catching that of a nearly illegible scribble; one eluding to an appointment. "Alphonse." He gazed over at Al. "and Edward Elric." And then to Ed. "It is a pleasure to meet the two of you. 'm Daryan Crescend." He pushed his chair in, and briskly, he walked around the desk. "Take all the time you need to rummage through my collection of books." He smiled, gliding his fingers through his hair. "We can begin at any time. There is no rush."
"Yeah, hi." Edward said distracted by the books. He wandered over to the bookshelves and, after dismissing the fiction novels, he started to poke at the old textbooks. Those were, after all, interesting. He hmmed a bit as he browsed.
After a few beats and a book in his hand, he asked, somewhat dazed and distracted. "Start what?"
Oho. Alphonse hadn't said anything to Edward about the appointment yet. How very- interesting. It would probably be better to let the younger brother address the situation at hand. Ease the elder in, sort to speak. So, playing the question off, as though it hadn't happened, Daryan changed subjects.
"Find anything you like, ..? I doubt that some of the Professors even use these older editions." He took a seat on the edge of his desk, watching as Ed browsed through his collection. "Although, that is what makes them interesting. Most of the curriculum changes are because they remove material and not so much because the add it."
Since Edward had a book in hand and was leafing through it with his right hand, balancing it on the shelf since his left hand was still in a sling, he was sufficiently distracted from the answer anyway. "Remove...yeah they do that." He was scanning paragraphs with his eyes.
"Got anymore potions texts?" He held up the book he'd found. He wanted to cross reference something he'd read. Really, it seemed as though Daryan's presence was barely noticed.
"I may." Standing up, Daryan circled the desk toward the shelf of books. He scanned the top shelf, smiling as he came across exactly what Edward was looking for. "Tell me this- Why, exactly, should I give it to you, ..? I am being ignored in my own office while you read my books. That does not seem fair at all." Tapping out a rhythm using the book on his shoulder, he waited for an answer.
As a testament to Edward's distraction, it took a moment for the question to register. "Huh?"
He looked up and blinked owlishly at Daryan as he ran the words through his mind again. "Um...cause I asked?" Ed looked a bit puzzled by the question. "I'm not ignoring you."
"I think you may want to rethink your answer. I barely got a hello." He blew out a sigh, falling against the desk again. "Just one more question, and then you can have my book. Why are you so interested in Potions, ..? Not many people go out of their way to learn that one. It's probably one of the most interesting, but by far, the hardest."
Edward stared at Daryan a moment, sizing him up as he tried to see if he was telling the truth. His eye flicked to the book and then back to him. "Fine. Hello."
He shifted foot to foot for a moment. "Potions is my favourite subject and the one I'm best at. It doesn't involve any wand work, which my skills are only okay at, and it involves lots of research and theories that I hope to blow out of the water someday." He used his hip to balance the book he already had open and held out his metal hand for the other one.
"I have to admire your sincerity." He had to keep himself from snickering. "I only wish I could have been good at Potions. It was never really my strong point. I was better with a wand. Hexes had to have been my favorite." This time, Daryan didn't try to hold back at all. He had loved to play pranks on other students using the long list of hexes he had known. "My, what an aspiration. Do you want to change a particular potion, or do you plan on rewriting the entire book?"
"Where's the challenge in changing just one potion?" Edward smirked slowly. "I've already accomplished that, successfully and made one of my own. I plan on rewriting not just the book, the library!" He had a mischievous glint in his eyes. His fingers twitched for the book he'd been promised.
"Mm. Point made. I'm sure it isn't all that easy to change a potion, but really, who is remembered for changing just one of something." Daryan smiled, watching as Edward suddenly became excitable. "Really. Wow. I have never heard of a student doing so before. You are on your way to making a mark here. If you don't mind me asking, what did you change about it, ..?" He trailed off, gazing at his own small collection of books, and then thinking about the hundreds of thousands sitting in the library. "Well, as I said, you're on your way. You've got the right attitude, that's for sure. I really wish I had it when I was your age, .."
Edward scoffed. "I don't care to be remembered. I just think differently from other people." He twitched his fingers again. "Book first, then I'll answer your question about the potion." He frowned at Daryan, he wasn't about to lose the upper hand with this guy.
"I noticed." Daryan was still holding the book out for Edward- but since the younger had recently gotten something of an ego boost, he must not have noticed. "Here it is. It's nice to know some students are keen on doing something with themselves here. I was never really into all this, which is why I became I detective." Well, that was only partially true. He was, in fact, never too interested in magic, but that wasn't the reason he had turned to law.
"A detective huh?" Edward said grasping the book and laying it on top of the other one as he attempted to cross-reference something. At times people could say his method of study was messy and disorganized, but that is perhaps how he pulled his most brilliant ideas out of thin air.
After a few minutes of reading, he did answer Daryan's question. Edward didn't break his word, that was something of a strength. "I created a highly potent but non-addictive pain relief potion, through innovation and testing, designed for those who suffer from chronic pain to have relief without the risk and disadvantage of addiction."
"International Detective. Mm. I worked on cases, not only here, but in the Muggle world as well. It was fun, ... while it lasted." He muttered, trailing off so that that last bit was barely audible. He blew out another sigh, wondering why- for a moment or two. But his thoughts were immediately interrupted as Edward began to speak; answering the question that he had asked only moments ago. He looked up, managing a smile. "You did that all by yourself. I must say, Edward, I'm impressed. Most students can barely keep a set of passing grades." He snickered, motioning for Edward to take a seat. "You don't have to stand the entire time, you know."
"I'll have you know I have excellent grades." Edward informed Daryan. "I have top marks in everything except Transfiguration and Charms and even then, my Charms mark is getting better because Professor Rangiku taught me how to do my wand work better."
Ed eyed the seat and then glanced at Daryan. Well since it would be easier to read in a chair, he nodded in concession and sat down in one, drawing his heels up on the seat so he could rest the second book on his lap as he thumbed the pages carefully. It was an interesting read, a lot like the book Professor Howl had gifted him at Christmas.
