Sakura and Axel battle_in_bloom September 9 2009, 01:57:00 UTC
Sakura closed her eyes for a moment, braced herself again, before going and washing her hands for the umpteenth time. Even with magic, infection was still a danger. She glanced over at the door, and saw more students coming in carrying injured.

Casting the anti-infection charm on her hands again, she went over to them, telling them which beds were free and directing them to them. They had reached a lull in the influx of injured, thankfully.

Axel was pretty certain this was the only time he had been in the Hospital Wing without having injuries of his own. It was probably the only time he'd come in her to look for someone too--or he hoped so. If something like this happened again he was calling conspiracy and jumping ship.

At any rate, he had someone to find--and of course she was up and about and helping. "Of course you'd be up and doing something to help. Wouldn't be you otherwise."

Sakura jumped about a foot in the air and came down with her hand over her heart. Her nerves were not in the best shape, to say the least. "Jesus, Axel!" she cried, and then ran over those words in her head.

Eyes wide, she turned back to the doorway. "A-Axel?"

Abruptly the control she'd worked so hard on keeping collapsed. She stumbled slightly, and then without even thinking about it, all but threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly with her own good one. The other was strapped up, healed of it's breaks, but still numb from the spell she'd cast. Had it only been hours ago? It felt like aeons.

"What are you doing here," she mumbled into his neck. "I told you to stay in the Hall."

This, this was not their normal interaction. They danced around and talked in circles. There was normally not a lot of hugging--and most relief was expressed and then glossed over with some out of place comment. Then again, today was not a normal day by any standards.

"There was something going on in there, I slipped out." He replied, cautiously returning the hug. He hoped he wouldn't get punched for sneaking away from the Hall--though he probably earned it.

"You holding up okay here?"

Screw normal interaction. They'd been tiptoeing around each other for months now, and Sakura was tired of it. Axel had worried about her, he'd talked her out of panic more than once that day, and he'd stayed with her until she'd fallen unconscious. If that didn't say something about how close they were again, Sakura didn't know what it would take.

"I'm doing all right," she said softly, drawing in a few deep breaths. "Still can't feel anything in my arm, but that's my fault. Delita exhausted himself, Al and Catty got hurt, and S-Sasuke--" They hadn't let her see him, which spoke volumes as to how bad he was. "God, I'm so glad you're not hurt." He was looking like the only one of her friends who wasn't. "I won't even hit you for leaving the Hall."

That...that was a lot of friends for Sakura to see injured. If Axel knew her at all, he had to know how that was wearing on her--had been wearing on her the whole day. He hugged her tighter before loosening his hold.

"I promised you. I wouldn't do anything stupid as long as you didn't right?" He replied lightly, grinning. "Your arm's okay outside of the not-feeling-anything bit? It's going to get pretty boring if you can only hit me with one arm for awhile you know."

"You stopped me from doing something stupid," she admitted, taking comfort in the tight hug before looking up at him when he let go. "I was about ready to tunnel out of that library with a spoon."

She rolled her eyes, already starting to feel a little more human. She'd been Healer Sakura ever since Delita had revived her in the Library (minus the part where she'd devolved into her twelve year old self upon hearing about Sasuke), and while it had been the only thing holding her together for the longest time, she could lean on Axel for a little bit now before she returned to that. "Tsunade healed the arm. It's find now, I'm just keeping it strapped up so that I don't accidentally do anything to it. Turns out pain can be pretty useful, sometimes. Speaking of, I can always kick you, if you're that desperate."

"I would have dug you out myself if you didn't make me follow the rules for once." Axel joked. Though really, he probably would have done just that if he didn't know it would have sent Sakura reeling more than she should.

"Kicking now? Moving up on the skill grid are we?" He laughed then, though his eyes were giving that arm of hers a sharp gaze. It seemed fine, but looking her over, Axel could definitely see the effect the event were having (or have had) on Sakura. "You're taking breaks right?"

"Look at you, listening when I tell you to," she teased back, touching his arm lightly to let him know she heard the truth in his words and appreciated the sentiment. "We'll have you potty-trained in no time."

She toed him in the shin, no force behind the movement. "I like to be well-rounded," she insisted. "Well, with Kakashi as a tutor I didn't really have much of a choice."

She avoided his gaze for a moment. Taking breaks would mean--

Something that she didn't want to think about.

"I...sit next to patients beds sometimes?" she offered. "I talked to 'Lita a little while ago, when he woke up." She frowned absently. "He'd better still be in bed..."

"I don't know if you'll ever accomplish that much, Princess." It was almost easy to forget what was going on around them when they joked like this.

Of course, Sakura could never really forget that--

If only she could forget long enough to take care of herself too.

"Sakura...I know you don't want to, but you'll have to rest. You'll run yourself ragged."

"Since when did that ever stop me trying, hmm?" It was a blessed escape, this banter, and as annoyed as she was at Axel for risking himself sneaking out of the Great Hall, she couldn't help but be incredibly grateful for him being there.

Right up until she caught the look on his face, and she knew, she knew--

Sakura seized that thought and slammed it into a wall. And then picked it up and sat on it for good measure. That sort of thinking wasn't helping anyone, least of all herself. She just - needed to keep going. There were still people who needed her help.

Sakura shrugged lopsided. "I hit ragged a while back and kept running, Axel. This is working for me. Trust me when I say if it wasn't, Tsunade would have knocked me out already. Personally."

She was lucky--Sakura was lucky that he was out of rants, and was too tired to be angry with her for running on what amounted to empty. Really, he should just be relieved she was out of that library--and he was.

"Fine, I'll let you go on that front Princess. But don't think I won't ask Tsunade to keep a good eye on you before I leave." He was serious on that. At least that might get her to sit down more often.

"You make me worry sometimes, I swear."

"Sh - Tsunade has more important things to worry about, Axel," Sakura sighed. There was a pause before she absently demanded another hug, forehead resting against his shoulder as she closed her eyes. She just wanted to make sure he was still there, that was all. "If she thinks I'm not doing my job, she'll stop me, but you can't expect her to keep an eye on me at all times when there are so many hurt people."

She stilled for a moment. "...I'm sorry," she said quietly.

Damn. Sometimes he hated when Sakura had a point--somthing that occured far more often than he would admit. "All right, all right. I won't bother her with it." Axel sighed.

Sakura cared too much. It was like her to push herself like this, he knew that. And he guessed it really wasn't his place to try and baby her.

"Don't worry about it. Just promise you'll take a breather when you get the chance, all right Princess?"

"Good," Sakura sighed, still talking into Axel's shoulder. It was strange, hugging him like this with no feeling in her arm. It was almost like he disappeared in the places where the strapped up limb came into contact with him. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter for a moment against that thought before opening them again.

...She could hear the worry in his voice, though, and her mind jumped on that train of thought. He'd helped her so much that day...maybe she could do a little something for him. "I might go and check up on Catty later," she told him. "She was a mess when she came in, she could probably use some company."

Okay, so it wasn't exactly a break, but it was probably about as close as Sakura was capable of letting herself right then.

Checking up on another student was not a break. Last time Axel bothered to check a dictionary, he was pretty sure a break constituted doing absolutely nothing in order to you know...rest.

"I'm sure she'll appreciate it." Still, it was probably the best he'd get from Sakura until things calmed down a bit around here. "Anyone else that needs visiting? I can do rounds with you or something--though I'm not sure my sarcasm will be wanted by most."
