It wasn't just a joke to lighten the mood. Shunsui hurt nearly everywhere. He did not want to worry her further, wanted the smile of relief that had bloomed across her face to stay. He had never seen his Nanao-chan so unguarded. A pity it had to be in such a situation where he could not bend down and shower her with kisses as he wanted to.
Shunsui was no stranger to pain. He had been a powerful man while alive, and the heir to a great and noble family. Men in such positions were often the targets of those who hungered for more than they had. Never had he been subject to so thorough a beating as the ghost had given him, but the greatest pain of all had been his fear that somehow Nanao would be hurt. His own aches were nothing compared to that, and the knowledge that she was unharmed was enough to dull the hurt so that he truly could not tell where it was the most.
"If you could look at my leg," he said finally, homing in the pain of his broken bone as the thing that needed the most fixing. "Perhaps we could move somewhere more suitable once I can walk on it."

She nodded, relieved to be able to do something to help. As she knelt over his leg, looking at the twisted way it lay, her vision began to blur. Blinking and shaking her head to clear it, she stopped suddenly as a single tear dropped onto him. Quickly she rubbed her eyes, not wanting him to see. She had to be composed, for Merlin's sake.
"I-" her voice cracked with emotion, and Nanao had to pause to swallow and compose herself. "I'm going to have to straighten it before I can do anything." She turned to look at him, aware that the only sedative spells she knew would not be enough to conceal the pain.

Shunsui sensed her hesitation as she examined his leg. It must have been worse than he thought. Certainly it felt bad, but if it looked bad enough to cause the unflappable Herbology professor to... was she crying? The ghost felt his heart do something funny in his chest; a simultaneous swelling and shrinking as it caught alight and froze at once.
"Nanao-chan..." he said, voice calm and gentle. "It's all right, Nanao-chan." He gave her an encouraging smile. "I trust you."

She held his gaze for a few seconds, then turned her focus back to his leg. "One," she counted and with a sharp jerk pulled the two parts of his bone back into alignment. She held it firmly in place, putting her weight on it in case Shunsui jumped at the sudden pain. She'd been told once that healing was easier and worked better when the patient wasn't tense, so that was what she'd tried to do.

She counted to one, and Shunsui relaxed. He was entirely aware of the trick she was about to play, but he did not wish to make the process any more painful than it had to be.
And it was painful. Shunsui's eyes slammed shut and he gritted his teeth, biting back a groan of agony as the terrible sensation of bones being moved, slid against each other and pulled back into place washed over him. It had been quite some time since he'd been able to feel anything at all, and it was upsetting to him, to say the least, that when he became corporeal it wasn't all women and sake, but was instead mayhem and broken bones. But there was Nanao in that mayhem, and it was Nanao caring for his broken bones, so he supposed it wasn't entirely a loss.
"Ahhh," he groaned, opening his eyes as the pain began to subside. "Nanao-chan, why must you hurt me so?" He looked at her, mischievous smile making it's way slowly across his face as he internally combated the stabs of hurt that still shot through him. "Don't you think such a good patient deserves a kiss?"
