Upon hearing the Headmaster's announcement, Shalice's heart had damn near pounded itself right out of her chest. The bitch was alive again. Sort of. For all intents and purposes. She was wandering around able to actually carry out her threats, and that absolutely terrified the redhead.
She'd herded up all the Gryffindors she could find, though she was sure some of the braver dumber ones had gone off to be heroes, and she'd definitely have to start planning detentions for them to last the rest of their years here, but she was out of focus, unable to calm the fear churning in her gut. Something was going to happen, she could feel it. But for now she had to focus on taking care of the students, on making sure that terrible ghost creature didn't harm any of them.
Shalice closed her eyes and, raising her arm, began to chant. A large, silver-white bubble dropped from the tip of her wand and grew, spreading to envelop the students in a shimmering glow.
One shield down, she thought, and tried to decide which to cast next.
Byakuya's speciality was in the subtle, surreptitious forms of magic, alrthough he excelled at the flashy sort as well. Still, he preferred simple, undetectable magic and thus was working his way around the Great Hallm quietly sheilding.
It was entirely by accident that he worked his way around to Shalice, or at least that's what he told himself. He certainly wasn't worried about her, knowing of the fued she had with Belladonna and the special hatred the ghost held for her.
"Shalice." A pause. "Do you require any assistance?" It wasn't a slur on her skills, although she might take it that way, but a genuine offer of assistance.
"Byakuya." The word was caught somewhere between a relieved sigh and an an annoyed grunt. Not that she was annoyed at him. It was just sort of a reflex where he was concerned, even if they'd reached something of an understanding since her backfired spell. She could, perhaps, even admit to herself that she was glad to see he was all right.
"Any shields you know would be useful. Anything defensive." It did not occur to her to take offense to his offer, though normally it probably would have. She was just too nervous, too afraid, and too focused on protecting the students to indulge in petty squabbles over pride.
Shalice raised her wand again, and this time a dark green bubble floated out to expand and cover the crowd.
Byakuya was taken by surprise by a small spark of amusement at tone to her voice. He paused for a moment, and then ignored both feelings, deeming them unnecessary at the present time

Shalice nodded her thanks and continued her casting. She could have done every spell quickly, and wandlessly, but she did not want to risk any mistakes. The lives of the students under her protection were too important, and if a fault in her spells caused any of them harm, she would never forgive herself.
She watched Byakuya out of the corner of her eye, noting the smoothness and efficiency with which he cast. His spells were strong, too, she could feel the power of them mingling with her own, and it was a surprisingly pleasant one. She could trust him to do this, then. To take care of the children if... when it came time for her to fight.
"Yes," she said absently, more focused on weaving a net of protective spells throughout the hall. "It would be... a shame if anything were to happen to her. To any of them." She turned to Byakuya then, eyes wide and serious. "You'll need to keep them safe."
'A shame' was perhaps the largest understatement Byakuya had ever heard in his life; then, he had not made his feelings on the matter of his sister entirely clear. It was no one's business but theirs, after all.
"...Indeed," he responded, pausing a moment to choose between a weaker wide spread shield, and a stronger, more centralised version. "I shall," he said eventually, in response to her latter comment. The way in which he said it left no doubts as to whether or not it had even been a question in the first place. If he did not quite place it above all else any longer, if there was something Byakuya took very seriously, it was his duty. And that was off course the only reason.
"You will not do anything stupid" It was phrased as a statement, but meant as an enquiry. Seldom did Byakuya Kuchiki use such blunt language.
It wasn't that Shalice had intended to make it seem as though Byakuya did not care for his sister, but rather more that she was too distracted for much conversation by the concentration and effort she was putting into weaving her spells together in a tight net, strong, but flexible enough so that one hard blow in the right place would shatter them completely.
"Good," she said, weaving more power into the intricate web of defensive spells she'd woven around the Great Hall, anchored in more places than she could count. She herself was an anchor, but Shalice Tilman-Sinclair was too experienced and too smart to let herself be the sole holder of the magical threads that held her shields together. That was an amateur mistake, one that had gotten many a witch and wizard killed. Her first Auror instructor had taught her that. "In defense, anchor your spells in as many places as you can. Using yourself as the sole hold gets everyone under your protection killed as soon as you get too distracted to keep hold." She could hear it as clearly as

Having cast the more complicated, involved protection spells he knew first in order to get them out of the way, Byakuya turned to simpler measures, working with Shalice in what he would have termed silence, had it not been for the tension present in the air of the Great Hall. With the amount of protections being put in place, it was unlikely that Belladonna would be able to get through all of them, but they could not stay behind them forever; eventually someone would be called upon to duel her, and it was this that the Professors knew all too well, even if it had not occurred to the students as of yet
