Prepare to be... Catty'd.scroll_heirAugust 21 2009, 06:45:32 UTC
It was late. Late enough that the library would be practically empty. Empty worked for Catty. Empty meant nobody would see Catty slip into the Restricted Section and question her about it, leading to awkward conversation and more lies. Or avoidance. She was better at avoiding or denying the truth than actually lying. In order to lie, Catty would have to admit... She shook her head. Bad enough Sakura knew she was going to be here, since the Gryffindor had to get a pass off her best friend.
She just needed to find any book that dealt with scrolls or manuscripts that were known to possess the keepers.
She jumped, eyes widening, heart racing, at the crashing sound. She was becoming too paranoid for her own good. Forgetting her search, she silently moved to where the sound had come from, glancing around a bookcase to see a fellow 6th year.
"L-lady?" Catty remembered that Lady had said she was having trouble sleeping. Trying to find a huge, boring book to knock herself out on?
Somewhere, Lady was reminiscing, about taking matters into her own hands, how the Ministry had literally left her with nothing. Or maybe it was better that way, that it should end differently. No one, save a few others, knew about what happened. There was nothing here to pester her, after all. Yet as Lady was just about to turn around, to set her attentions back on the chair...
The call came and caused her to tense up in the shoulders. She paused, listening to remember the voice... oh, yes. It was Catty, a fellow sixth year. She managed to at least stifle the flinch, keeping her face cool, the girl simply turned her head. And stared.
Now, how the hell was this going to be explained? But then-
That chair. Damn it. It wasn't as if she was angry, the silence only reflected how unsure she was on how to respond, but carefully with one hand, she bent back down to push the chair back up. Finally, blue and red eyes settled on the other girl -- well, narrowed. "Yeah?" Was all Lady could answer back with, quietly. Begrudgingly. Cradling the

Catty's body relaxed a bit, and she slipped into an easy and comfortable smile, stepping out from behind the shelves. Smooth, Turner, creeping up on people. The stare was a bit unnerving, the silence even more so. Oh no, the brunette did not feel very awkward at all.
Shifting her gaze from Lady, she could now see the chair on the floor. That answered her previous question, but now she was plagued with more. What was Lady doing here? What was she looking for? She bit down on her lip. God, she was a hypocrite, because if anybody wanted to ask her those questions, she'd have to enter Evasion Mode.
Still... The way Lady held that book to her, the curiosity that itched at Catty burned a little bit brighter. "Hey! Wow, I'm glad I wasn't just imagining that sound. Or someone I wouldn't want to run into," she said with her same smile, but she hadn't planned on running into anyone. Fate was cruel.
Alright, that was enough to make her relax -- if only a little. She took her eyes back off of her, but still, the book didn't leave her chest. Awkward didn't even cover it, not with the way she greeted her. She seemed harmless, didn't she? As long as Catty wasn't asking about her... studies.
It was late, after all, and Lady was already tired, rubbing her hair, feigning a yawn, "Oh," Her tone changed, softer... calmer. "I thought I was the only one who came out here this late..."
Yet on this end, the same questioned seemed to cross her mind, and yes, it would have been hypocritical, "I think most of everyone isn't around here... or the creepers linger by."
This was really Catty's first late-night trip to the library, and her actual first search of something very specific in the Restricted Section, but how could the girl really expain that without raising questions. She tried to avoid staring at the book. "Ah... Yeah, I... Got bored, sitting in my room. So I thought I'd come to the library?" Great, the raised inflection in her tone had made that sentence come out as a question instead of a firm statement. At least she did't try to say she got lost on her way to the kitchen (a very interesting memory from her 3rd year involving a ghost).
She moved closer to Lady, still smiling. "You still having trouble sleeping?" She asked softly, a touch of concern in her voice.
Lady didn't have anything to say, but the faint raise of her eyebrow came at the end of Catty's reply, "Uh," Lady finally made a point to shuffle back to her table, her notes still sprawled about, "I won't rat you out, it's fine by me if you're out here." It sounded like an excuse, at least to Lady. The tension in her shoulders came again, just as she was desperate enough to shove whatever visible details underneath folders, anything to hide what she was reading on, "They come down more on the first and second years more than us." Lady added.
She almost seemed irritated at the question, "Yeah, but it's nothing. Studying helps sometimes..."
Catty nodded, digging into the pocket of her jeans and producing the pass she got off Sakura, holding it up. "I'm not too worried about one of the professors catching me." At least, not really. "But I appreciate it." She shoved the thing back into her pocket, adverting her eyes and instead focused on the books on the shelves. Biting on her lip, Catty let out a soft sigh and looked over her shoulder at Lady.
"Did you ever try the warm milk thing?" She was never going to find anything on her own. And she could ask for help without it seeming strange, right? "Speaking of studying, how well do you know some of the books in this section?"
"Admittedly, no I haven't... not yet," She didn't quite feel like lying just yet. The suggestion honestly graced her mind until this moment.
Still avoiding eye contact, Lady was staring down at what she collected so far, away from work, "I wanted to try this section one more time."
Maybe something would come up. Maybe that professor was right -- and Lady was hoping for the latter. Was that so wrong? She spent too much time in this section as it was, and at the inquiry, Lady snorted, "I think I practically live here next to the common rooms. I'd say... pretty well. What were you looking for?"

"Oh..." Rocking on her heels, Catty turned her head back to stare at the shelves, but none of the titles really registered in her mind. She turned around, facing Lady and smiling again. Friendly was nearly always the key. Or at least made someone seem approachable.
"Living in the Restricted Section? The smell of old pages can't be good for you." As if to prove her point, Catty took a deep breath and then made a face. "Well, I am looking for any material on... Scrolls. Or manuscripts," she added after a moment's pause, keeping her face calm and the smile softly in place. "That, well, possess people, actually." She wondered if that made sense.

"I'm... used to it," She wasn't sure, there was a shrug along with that. Lady didn't smile -- if anything, it made her feel more awkward, making a point to avoid eye contact, but kept her shoulders and posture loose at all possible.
Yet that earned a quizzical look from her, finally acknowledging Catty with a look, a raised eyebrow. Again, it would have been hypocritical to ask. But possession... well... it came up a few times in her search. Again, Lady looked down at her black loafers, "I... haven't heard of anything like that," Admitted Lady, "But possession? There's a few books, here. I read them, I don't know... your question confuses me a little."
Catty's eyes widened slightly when Lady looked at her. Figures that a totally out there question would get her attention, and now Catty would have to find a way to explain herself.
"It's a specific sort of possession. Like... One's soul being bound to something, and it drains them of their very magic." She bit her lip. She was saying too much. Retreat. She forced out a laugh, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly. "I guess it does sound pretty confusing, huh?"
