A celebration from one of the Abrahamic faiths... Alot of it is non-religious in recent times.

So it's an event that continues despite the religious foundation is ignored?

Yes, though it's not completely ignored by some. A lot of it just evolved into a celebration of more good will and cheer, that many prefer to focus on. Well, that and the exchange of gifts that go along with it...

So it's just festivities to exchange gifts.

Christmas: a religious holiday, most commonly celebrated by those of Christian faith. The holiday is said to be the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, however, evidence suggests that Christ was not born in December. It is likely that the holiday derived instead from the pagan celebration of harvest, Saturnalia and was later given biblical meaning.

...In recent years, it has become highly commercialized.

I'm presuming with your knowledge of the old rituals, you're more prone to celebrate the older customs rather than the newer ones?

asolemnchild December 9 2010, 03:07:52 UTC
...I do not celebrate the holiday.

It's supposedly a religious holiday, but nowadays, it's mostly commercial. People exchange gifts and generally act all stupid about family. I only ever cared about the gifts, as a kid.

Actually, Afghanistan but, close enough. poisoninyourtea December 9 2010, 03:38:20 UTC
Yes, it seems that religious traditions are completely forgotten from what I'm being told.

Don't say that around the people I used to drink with. Die-hard Catholics, and they sure as hell kept the holidays holy.

[there's a little Christmas tree doodle to the left of his message] Christmas is awesome, that's what it is!

It's a celebration of everything that's awesome and good in the world. I mean, yeah a lot of it is getting presents and stuff but it's also awesome because there's all this good will and people are nicer and there's so much goodness that it's amazing because sometimes it feels like there isn't enough of that, you know? I think that everyone can see that there's goodness in the world better when there's so much of it surrounding them.

And there's cookies and all kinds of other good food, like Christmas puddings and sugar plums and candy canes! Oh, and Santa. I mean, a lot of people believe that Santa doesn't exist, but that's totally not true. Santa is real, and he totally exists. I'm going to go the the North Pole someday and prove it.

What else . . . Oh! And everything also looks really pretty around Christmastime too. I mean, you have the snow and all the lights and decorations and tinsel and everything just kind of ( ... )

Yes, I believe I have gotten the general idea from other students who introduced the meaning of this specific holiday to me. Not in as much detail as you have.
