Yes, though it's not completely ignored by some. A lot of it just evolved into a celebration of more good will and cheer, that many prefer to focus on. Well, that and the exchange of gifts that go along with it...
Christmas: a religious holiday, most commonly celebrated by those of Christian faith. The holiday is said to be the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, however, evidence suggests that Christ was not born in December. It is likely that the holiday derived instead from the pagan celebration of harvest, Saturnalia and was later given biblical meaning.

It's supposedly a religious holiday, but nowadays, it's mostly commercial. People exchange gifts and generally act all stupid about family. I only ever cared about the gifts, as a kid.

It's a celebration of everything that's awesome and good in the world. I mean, yeah a lot of it is getting presents and stuff but it's also awesome because there's all this good will and people are nicer and there's so much goodness that it's amazing because sometimes it feels like there isn't enough of that, you know? I think that everyone can see that there's goodness in the world better when there's so much of it surrounding them.
And there's cookies and all kinds of other good food, like Christmas puddings and sugar plums and candy canes! Oh, and Santa. I mean, a lot of people believe that Santa doesn't exist, but that's totally not true. Santa is real, and he totally exists. I'm going to go the the North Pole someday and prove it.
What else . . . Oh! And everything also looks really pretty around Christmastime too. I mean, you have the snow and all the lights and decorations and tinsel and everything just kind of

Yes, I believe I have gotten the general idea from other students who introduced the meaning of this specific holiday to me. Not in as much detail as you have.
