hard work or hardly working?

So it's been 9 months since i started Wing Chun. It's been ok but my skills are totally not where i wanted them to be. On the flip side it takes years to really proficient in sparring with a style. Right now i feel we focus too much on technique drills rather than applying them in an unknown situation. Even when we have the expanded techniques it still feel unnatural to combine them in the way my brain is thinking.

How to fix this. I thought about that drill sifu and I did but that's not the answer. If he's not there I can't do it nor can a lower level person learn it so something else needs to be created to fill that gap. Also, all drills needs to be 4 strikes deep to create the same situation that will occur in WC sparring. There also needs to be more working combining kicks with hands AND how to initiate successfully.

I'll add more as i think.  oh and obviously i need to run more.
