i was watching the debut game show
Dollar and Sense on channel U when i caught the commercial for
Crossfire, featuring who else but
wendy cheng. so xiaxue's comments stuck with me for quite a while even though it was aired for less than five seconds. in response to a teacher commenting on how he disliked his students reading the contents of her blog, she retaliated saying (along the lines of) "if you are not happy with that, i suggest you inform your students not to visit my weblog in the first place".
why can't they say that to all the "seditious" blogs out there. if you donch like the racist jokes and Jesus cartoons, then donch read la. it's totally fine for anything to appear on a singaporean-authored website, as long as by default you have the option not to view it. of course let's not forget that being singaporeans who are often bullied by fellow singaporeans, you and i are subjected to the laws of the island much more conveniently. that's already on top of the fact that singaporeans prefer to pick on singaporeans instead of foreigners.
but really, let's instead talk about why people will want to stop reading your blog. with that, i shall introduce you to a very good theory.
let's say you author a blog that's, say 3/10, and 10 being what people deem as a good blog (and that's subjective). now if you value this score system at all, you'll always want to strive for higher grades, like 6/10 if possible. so you do whatever it takes, write what people want to read, make the website all fancy and sophisticated, photoshop here photoshop there.
and then you eventually attain that 6/10 after all the hard work of pleasing the web folks. it's nice how you've come so far from where you started, until you decide to be greedy. you want to be a celebrity blogger, a big-timer with all the fame and fanfare. thus you work your fat butt harder for another 2 points worth from the web audience. congratulations, you are now an 8/10. you bask in the limelight as the large crowd turns up to notice what it takes for you to become an 8/10.
just as you're hooked onto being an 8/10, people start losing the hype over the superficial aspects of your blog, and only those who are seriously interested in your content (ie: 3/10) lingers around. now who would feel the pinch more when there's a low web traffic to your website, 3/10 or 8/10? i guess being ugly isn't all that bad huh.
so back to the question of "why will people want to stop reading your blog?", my solution is -- why bother? just blog what you want to blog about, be it your autistic child, or politics, or your own life in general. why value this score system? why be a whore to service what the web readers want to read? just express yourself, and there will be people who love you for who you are, 3/10.
which comes back to you,
girl -- beauty is only skin-deep. you can do
so much to beauty, but don't misinterpret it with love.
