I think I'm weird when it comes to traveling. Most of my friends have traveled the world, gone at least to Europe and Asia. And I just don't think I have the same attitude to traveling that they do. I don't have the desire or drive to go see those places. Nothing pulls me there except a vague curiosity and a sense of I-really-should-because-that's- ( Read more... )

I think if I had grown up with the history and kind of experiences as you had growing up in Russia (bad &good) as a little girl I wouldn't be interested in travelling to Europe either.

As an Australian whose idea of culture growing up is birthday parties at McDonalds, running under sprinklers on hot summer days BBQs blasting from the backyard and never getting to spend Australia Day anywhere but the Adelaide cricket ground because of the Australia Day test match. The allure of over-populated, rich or poor European countries which have more culture and history engrained in the dirt on their ground than Australia has ever got a chance in hoping for is too strong for me to ignore. Obviously Australia has it's own history too but it is so incredibly dwarfed by everything I'm learning and experiencing over here. It is so different.

It's all relative I guess. I find it incredibly fascinating over here but it's not so strange that you are more open and fascinated by wide open spaces and an even bigger sense of freedom and diversity that Australia and particularly Russia can offer.

Our opinions are shaped by our experiences I think. I think that the more I travel and experience - and I do have plans to go to Europe, India, Asia of course - the more my opinions might change. I hope that I discover a love of travel and a love of cultures! But at this point I just long to see nature, I feel like I missed out by being stuck in suburban environments my entire life.
On a side note, it's really not popular to admit that you like the idea of luxury, geez! I feel like I said that I hate puppies or something.
