(no subject)

I am a voice in a box.
So are you, for that matter.

It has been too long since TOK.
I miss it, and want to have a conversation about it with people. so the internet will have to do.
some what ironic, as it is the internet I want to talk about.

Here is the thing about the voice in a box, the disembodied soul: They are easy. The repercussions do not seem as immediate, and they status is dampened. We can do things are a voice we could not normally do. get away with things we would not normally get away with. there is no person. at least, that is how it seems to work for most people.

Instant messaging is where one would see this the most. you can masquerade as anyone you want. you can pretend to be someone else, you pretend to be drunk, you can do all sorts of things that one would do in their normal situations. Talk of sex and drugs with people you would never broach the subject with in person. It is this strange opening up of the world.

But at the same time, it closes it down. by removing the person from the equation, it is easy to stop thinking of the person on the other end as a person, as someone. They are only words. It is easy to slip into not really thinking of who it really is on the other end. that person's complexities can be lost to us. I know that is how is has worked for me, both ways.

its not so much that the internet steals out 'humanity', but it is just seems to makes it easy for us to forget about ours, and others.

I my self have taken to trying to use the IM in a similar manor in which I speak. Oh, does it catch some people off guard. it is like I am coming right out of left field and they don't know what to say. dry wit and sarcasm don't seem to help.
