Apartmentia Dementia, & "I am dreaming of living in a tree"

Apartment-hunting rates quite low on my list of enjoyable activities. Particularly when I'm trying to do it long-distance and the cheapest rents are still $300 more than I pay now, in the most expensive quarter of town. Once I find a place, then I'll be pleased as punch and wasting hours on decorating and personalizing the place. But right now, ( Read more... )

I like small too. I dream of being rich and famous enough to get a really amazing architect to help me design a teeny tiny, avant-garde house. In my last apartment, there was hardly any floor, and I had to store all my stuff (I have a lot of stuff, which seems contradictory, but I love clutter as a design aesthetic, so it works out) vertically, with shelves absolutely everywhere.

My niece and I were just discussing a tree house the other day, though we meant the classic kids' clubhouse kind. But I've always wished there were a city of houses in trees. I suppose I should count my blessings that there really is a Venice (although not for long, probably, sigh...)

I am exactly the same, in terms of regarding clutter as a positive aesthetic. I strongly believe that people with cluttered, actively messy houses are the sort of people who are curious, creative, and interesting. People with perfectly organized houses that look like they belong in magazines are generally not terribly interesting and original individuals.
I've joked that I live very three-dimensionally, much more so than most people, because of all my storage methods involving unused space above eye level. (Rows of nails along the top of a wall to hang hats, for instance.)

Since writing this entry about little spaces, I've begun imagining my dream house. What a fantastic idea you have - to hire a great architect! I'm sure the architect would love it as well because it would be an unusual challenge. I compare living in a small space to having a "nest" that is just the right size and coziness for me.

That's right - you're heading to Japan! Man oh man, am I ever envious. Japanese culture fascinates me to no end.
