Cyclage

I am now a proud bike owner!

I haven't owned a bicycle since I was in middle school and my parents got me a "grown-up" bike (e.g. not a little child's bike). The frame was blue and shiny, so I named it Blue Moon. Sadly, I almost never rode it - I'm not sure why. I think it was because I didn't have any friends nearby with bikes, and biking by yourself as a kid can be a little lonely. It can also be fun, but I wasn't about to spend my time out contemplating nature and enjoying the solitude when I could be holed up in my best friend's bedroom, sharing peach lip gloss and listing all the boys in our grade in order of cuteness.

At any rate, my only other attempt at bike ownership was during college, when I purchased a woman's bike at a garage sale for probably $10. I rode it no more than two times. Then it went into my boyfriend's garage and sat for over a year, attracting rust. When I left, I didn't bother to take it with me, partly because I couldn't remember the combination to the lock wrapped through the wheels. I wonder if it's still there...I would be willing to bet that it is.

But now I really do own a bike! It's just perfect - neither new, shiny, and begging to be nabbed, nor a creaking, wobbling deathtrap. As a major bonus, it's a girl's bike, which means it's much less likely to get stolen. Now I just need to learn how exactly to care for a bike, which I've never done before.

I also want to customize (i.e. decorate) it, which is difficult on a bike since there's not much surface area. I suppose I could wrap all the bars in yellow "caution" tape, or pink duct tape. I'd like to do a pirate theme but have no particularly exciting ideas. Of course, everything I do has to actually decrease the value of the bike, to minimize the likelihood of it getting stolen, so I'm not going to add anything really fancy or expensive. Just some fun, unique touches. Ideas?
