All futures rush toward apocalypse. Not hordes of zombies and other dystopian fictions, but the much scarier decay of our bodies, our lives. The inevitable depradations of aging, bodies that are slower, frailer. Cancer. Alzheimer's. Relationships that fray and fade. Loneliness. Even at our strongest we are weak. We imagine the entire world on a path toward destruction as a way to change unconquerable death into a fightable foe, because facing the personal apocalypse is impossibly daunting. Universal chaos is easier to deal with.
