Luck

A headache finally caught up with me yesterday, complicating my journey slightly. I was heading west on 40, scanning roadside signs for lodging, around 5 p.m. I took a random exit because it promised a Budget Inn, but no Budget Inn was immediately apparent, and then the deluge. For about 10 minutes it rained buckets. Then the sky cleared and I got back on 40, heading for Frederick, MD, where I was sure I would find a hotel.

Well, the 13 miles to Frederick took about 90 minutes to traverse. There had been several accidents, presumably during the rainstorm, and traffic was a bumper-to-bumper crawl.

Bad luck, right? But really I think it was good luck. If I hadn't had a headache and been desperately searching for the nearest hostelry, I wouldn't have exited at Mt. Airy just before the storm hit. And if I hadn't done that, I would have been directly in the path of the multiple crashes on 40.

Another piece of luck: my rental car is a Vibe. They told me to pick anything on the lot, and I figured taking a car I already know how to drive was the safest choice.
