I don't know what to say...I just don't know. Anyway, you can blame
sleepismyfriend . This was her idea, although she hasn't seen it yet, so every goofy weirdness in this is mine.
So away we go...
WHY ARE WE HERE?
The Doctor stepped out of the TARDIS and laughed. He spun around as he looked at his surroundings. ‘Ah, here we are, New York City, just like I promised!’
‘How can you tell so quickly?’ Amy said, stepping out of the TARDIS, Rory following her.
‘Oh come on, Pond, you can tell just by the smell in the air.’
Rory walked over towards the windows and railing overlooking the city. ‘Maybe that’s how, really.’ He pointed at something.
Amy walked over and joined him, following his gesture to see what Rory saw. There, sitting proudly in the harbour was the Statue of Liberty. ‘Yea, that might give it away, eh Doctor?’
‘Yes, well, there is that too.’ He didn’t think too long before jumping into the purpose of their visit. ‘Come on you two, we have someplace to be. Not anyplace we can afford to miss, just the sort of place where we can get exactly what we need to make this visit worthwhile!’
‘What are you going on about?’ Rory finally asked.
The Doctor turned towards Rory and Amy before spinning on his heel and heading into the opposite direction. ‘This sort of thing waits for no man, or Time Lord either for that matter.’ He started walking quickly, holding one finger up to test the wind, then pointing forward. ‘Onward!’ he called back to his two companions. ‘Someone remember where we parked!’
Rory looked over at Amy, a confused expression on his face. Amy just smiled, shrugged, took his hand and pulled him along after the Doctor. Rory looked around and finally realised where they were. ‘We’re on top of the Empire State Building!’
Amy’s smile broadened. ‘New York City, just like he said. Isn’t this great!’
Rory wasn’t sure he could get used to walking into the TARDIS, having it be this huge magical box, then the next time he walked out of it being in a completely different place. He looked over at Amy and the smile on her face and knew he’d do anything to keep that smile there, even if it meant travelling with this madman with a box.
As they exited the building, both Amy and Rory looked upwards at the skyscrapers and the surrounding area. They almost got separated from the Doctor as he paid no attention to his companions, instead walking with purpose, appearing to know where he was going. Still holding hands, Amy elbowed Rory to pull him away from looking up and pointed to where the Doctor was quickly distancing himself from them.
They rushed to catch up, only to find him standing in front of a street vendor, a look of bliss on his face. ‘Doctor, what’s going on?’
He spread his arms wide. ‘This! This is why we’re here.’ To the vendor, he said, ‘Three please.’
The vendor went about his business, opening his cart and causing steam to pour out. He took a set of tongs and reached in, pulling out a hot dog and putting it on a bun, then handing it to the Doctor and repeating himself for the other two hot dogs. The Doctor quickly handed a hot dog each to Amy and Rory.
Paying the vendor, the Doctor pointed to all the fixings they could add to their dogs. ‘Come on, load em up! You don’t get this experience every day.’
Amy looked with a more than a little disdain at the hot dog in the bun in her hand. ‘What is this, Doctor?’
The Doctor gave her an odd expression. ‘It’s a hot dog, Pond, certainly you’ve seen them before.’
‘Of course I know it’s a hot dog, Doctor, but why are we getting one?’
The Doctor looked up from where he’d been actively piling the strangest combination of fixings onto his dog. ‘Because this is New York. This is what we do when we’re in New York.’ He leaned in towards Amy. ‘These are Nathan’s hot dogs.’ He looked up and nodded for Rory to lean in before whispering conspiratorially, ‘These are the best hot dogs in the known Universe. And of course the best place to get them is,’ he stopped before leaning back and shouting, ‘NEW YORK CITY!’
Amy and Rory looked at each other before shrugging, smiling and digging into their hot dogs.
