Mission Accomplished -- A True Espionage Story by me

May 20, 2007 12:38

It was dark outside as I pulled up to the establishment. I was dressed in black slacks, black shoes and a blue Fed Ex sweater. I didn’t really work for the company, but I knew that in order for the mission to succeed; just any old disguise wouldn’t do, so I had to make my own. "I promised a surprise and a surprise is what they’ll get," I murmured to myself as I stepped outside the car, reached into the back seat and grabbed the package that I had put together earlier that day. "If this doesn’t get me inside nothing will," I said as I approached the building, while walking at a steady pace as not to draw too much attention to myself. I held the package on my right shoulder to block my face, I knew that there was only one person who could identify me, but I didn’t want to take any chances. I needed everything to go smoothly on a mission as important as this one; besides most Fed Ex carriers held the packages they delivered in this manner, so I couldn’t do anything different or my cover would be blown.

I had never been inside the building before, only in front of it and no one knew I was coming, because that would ruin everything. As I approached the first door I came upon an unforeseen problem. There was no buzzer, no way of getting inside. Here I stood before a locked glass door, the only thing keeping me away from completing my mission. It was getting late and I knew that if I didn’t do something soon, I would never be able to get inside and would have to go home knowing I failed my mission. I knew right then, that I had to do something drastic. I pulled out my phone and called the person I was delivering to, while thinking of a story that would get me into the building. No answer. I tried a few more times to no avail; they must have already fallen asleep. It wasn’t even 10pm yet, but I knew they had a long stressful day.

Just then by a sudden twist of fate, someone started approaching the building, "Yes! I finally lucked out I said to myself. "I’ll get him to let me in." He approached the door and before I could say anything he turned, looked at me and said, "I left my key inside are they coming to open the door for you?" I felt a sense of hopelessness come over me as I told the guy that no one was coming. I stood there for 5 minutes watching him knock on the door in hopes that someone would respond.

Feeling defeated, I started to walk away. As I headed back to my car I thought to myself, "Had I wasted my time by thinking I could pull this mission off? Did I drive almost 20 miles this late at night just to fail? Was this whole day of planning and gathering everything I needed to put in the box, all for naught?" The answer was no! This mission was too important; I just couldn’t give up now.

I walked back to the building where I left the guy knocking and just as I turned the corner I saw him waving me in. Two people who knew him from the building were letting him in as they went out to have a smoke. As he held the door open for me, I walked by the two guys who glanced at me with a peculiar look, but none of that mattered anymore because I was in!

I quickly thanked the guy, turned the corner and went up the stairs. I slowly approached the door I wanted, with the package in hand. I attempted to call the person inside to tell them Fed Ex was waiting, but there was no answer. Just then a guy approached the door and looked at me, standing in the hallway. I recognized him as a relative from a picture I had seen in the past. He didn’t know me, but I was sure it was him. I knew that he didn’t speak English, but I had come too far to let that stop me now. I showed him the package with the label I made. He recognized the name on the label, thanked me and walked inside the apartment with the package.

I turned to leave, smiling as I walked down the stairs heading back towards the main door. There I ran into trouble, as I passed the two guys who had let me in earlier. "We didn’t know Fed Ex delivered this late" one said. "Well this one was a special delivery" I quickly responded. "How come we didn’t see your truck outside?" said the other as he took a step closer to me. "Well, I finished up late so I took this one in my own car." Before he could say another word I quickly interjected, "Besides, think of what today is!" I believe that’s when it hit them; because they looked at each other, smiled and wished me a good night.

A sigh of relief came over me as I walked out the front door and got back in my car. As soon as I started the engine I received a phone call. "Did you call me?" She said sounding half-asleep. "Yes, just to tell you that Fed Ex delivered a package to you." I said while laughing. "When did this happen and why would they deliver something to me?" She asked while climbing out of bed to find the package sitting by her bedroom door. "Where did this come from?" she asked again as I could hear her opening the box. "Like I told you, from Fed Ex, too bad you weren’t awake to accept it; you would have loved to see me in the uniform I put together." Before she could respond in confusion, I heard her say, "I don’t believe it!"

"I knew you were too sick to leave the house, but I didn’t want you to think that I forgot about you today." Happy Valentine’s Day and get well soon! Told you I’d surprise you one of these days, I said as I wished her a goodnight and hung up the phone. As I headed back home smiling, all I could say to myself was Mission Accomplished and I hope she doesn't get sick on her Birthday!
