I'm almost done! I have two episodes left. I suddenly got lots of feelings and decided to post about them. I may add more once I watch the finale, but for now, here you go:
It's okay to like something if it's problematic. That's something that people around here keep saying, and it's true. But you know there is one show you don't have to feel guilty about, I think
Michele was the one who said it, and that show is Friday Night Lights.
I watched the first episode on iTunes because it was free, and I didn't have anything better to do on a long train ride. It was amazing, and it made me tear up. The first season was like a long documentary, it just felt so real and genuine. I hate football. I hate all sports but I really hate football. The thing is, Friday Night Lights isn't about football. It's about small town Texas, and the characters, the people who live in it and their relationships with each other. I can't begin to explain how I feel about it just because it's so different than other shows. The only way to persuade someone to like it is to have them sit and watch it, because there's a quality to it that isn't really easily explained. I think it's because of the way that it was filmed and produced, at least from reading the Wikipedia page on it.
I love all of the characters so much, every single one. Matt Saracen is obviously pretty great, he's too good to be true but likeable anyway, and the episodes where he deals with his dad's death are absolutely stunning. His relationship with Julie is also almost sickeningly sweet, but the two characters make it okay and adorable somehow. I like Julie Taylor, she's kind of snotty sometimes, but that's how teenagers are. Eric and Tami Taylor are obviously amazing. They're my favorite married couple on television, they're simply perfect together and I never ever want to get married but when I'm watching them I kind of want that for a second (the desire goes away as soon as I'm done watching, but the fact that they can make me feel that, even for a second, really speaks for the quality of the chemistry and relaxed vibe between them).
Tim Riggins is kind of an iffy character for me. I mean, I usually hate characters like him, but I love how the show makes his journey and his emotions believable. I loved his friendship with Jason, those two made me happy. I liked him with Julie (totally shipped it for a minute and read the only two pieces of fic about them I could find on the Internet - if you have any more send them my way!), and though I didn't like he and Becky as a romantic couple I loved their friendship. She was like the sister he never had. I also really really liked Billy Riggins even though he's basically often a jerk and not the brightest guy either. I just want to hug him for some reason.
The Collette girls! I love them so much! Mindy is great, I love how even after she gets with Billy she doesn't give up her job because it's what she does, it's what she's good at. I love her relationship with Becky and how they become like sisters. I love Tyra. I love how she goes after what she wants and becomes friends with Julie and is mentored by Tami Taylor and achieves her dreams.
I don't care much for Landry. He seems to be the vehicle through which others achieve things, so that part isn't interesting to me. He's just...okay, I guess. (What even was that random murder subplot though, jeez.)
Smash is great. He was a little full of himself which kind of irritated me, but when he had that knee injury (what was up with that time skip by the way) I loved his progression back up to what he wanted for himself. I loved his relationship with Waverly. I LOVED WAVERLY SO MUCH. God. She's the best.
I don't really care much for Lyla. I mean obviously I like her, but she didn't grab me the way some of the other characters did. I think my favorite thing about her was her issue with the whole Tim/Jason love triangle. I found that super interesting. (Also why would you name two main characters Lyla and Tyra, I'm constantly typing/saying the wrong name).
I loved the gay girl who played in Landry's band. She was great. I love the second generation kids. Becky is fantastic, though her crush on Tim started to get irritating after a while. I love Vince, he's fantastic. I'm running out of steam here, but I also love Vince's parents, they are awesome. Luke is pretty good too, and I wish we would have seen more of Hastings Ruckle, I found the little bits of his character that we did get to be super interesting and very relatable for me personally. JESS MERRIWEATHER THOUGH. MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CHARACTER! A girl who has a history with Vince and takes care of her little brothers and loves football just like any other of the guys and wants to be a coach!!! YES PLEASE GIVE ME MORE!
I don't think I have anything else to say, though I may add more after I finish watching the finale.
