Quick update for posterity.
I GOT THE FUCKING FULBRIGHT! I just bought my plane ticket to Oslo, leaving Anchorage at the end of August. After a one-day orientation in Oslo, I will travel by rail to Bergen (the fjord capital of the world) where I will begin doing research on homeotic gene regulatory proteins in tunicates!
So - not only do I have the opportunity to learn bioinformatics/comparative genomics, to learn computational biology, to learn systems biology and ChIP-chip and evo-devo.... but I get to learn it all and live here:
The Fulbright is adjusted for cost-of-living, so they are giving me more than enough money to cover my rent and food. Considering I intend to bike everywhere, I may actually be able to save money!
HOLY HELL.
