pleased to announce that i'm a total conformist and i love this shit.
ok so i need to yell about the ep 6 kiss because hand holding augh sonofabitch hand holding. like, a kiss can mean many things or nothing at all but. BUT. + that damn jawline. and the thing is the hand holding ties in to ji hyuk who is wonderful. lee minki is so, so talented, but i didn't actually /like/ byung hee. like they all kept saying, he was crazy. it would be so exhausting to be the focus of his attention; he'd need someone as high octane and crazy as he was. and su ah isn't that. but i'll get to her in a bit. JI HYUK.
he's a born leader, a better leader than byunghee could've been because byunghee was a rocket charging forward, forging on ahead, passing them all by. and ji hyuk takes care of everybody, and it's not even like he's hiding it. he looks tough, he looks a little rough so it's a little surprising at first but he doesn't actually try to hide how naturally inclined to taking care of people he is. tearing up the contract was something he never would've been conflicted about, because it's like his vision is clear, it's a simple matter of seeing that that's not it. cf. hyunsoo, who broke my heart a little with his story of being 'replaced' by byunghee, except it wasn't even like that. byunghee and ji hyuk naturally shine, whereas people like hyunsoo and wookyung can only stand behind and look ahead and try really hard and try really hard not to care. seriously, take note kdrama writers, good, great things can happen without the male lead being an asshole. he's clever and he's good and it will give me so much joy to see him and su ah happy, comfortable together.
but then, the thing with ji hyuk and su ah is that they're so naturalistic together. there wasn't any moment where she was all sparkly where ji hyuk started to fall for her. and su ah is a slight puzzle; i dig that she's not stock main girl, all fierce kookiness and lots of yelling "yah!" at people. she's great but in a sense she doesn't give off a definitive sense of personality, she's... just a person. a person with distractingly smooth and shiny hair. and her and ji hyuk just fall together, and they fit.
and then there's hyunsoo and yerim and oh how i love them already. myungsoo is a terrible actor but i feel inclined to cut him some slack because he doesn't know what to do with his face irl either. the important thing is he looks the part perfectly. and yerim is so rad and i would watch her show too, because this show knows how to do characterisation (boy, does it). he's so rude to her and she's so consistently great and i'm so excited about them.
wookyung... i want to like her. i always feel for her kind of third wheel bc they're no different to our leads really, that same persistence in our leads usually comes across as a positive. the only difference is their feelings end up reciprocated. but wookyung is starting to piss me off. she's had two or three moments now where she's been hurt by ji hyuk's obvious lack of interest in her, and that's fine and she totally gets to have that, but she's pressuring him constantly and it's tiring and depressing to watch, and her refusing to allow him to be happy with su ah, her refusing to allow him to be happy, is selfish and irritating and gdi i really hate love triangles. sung hoon just told su ah he won't give up either and i like sung hoon but smh.
something else i find awesome is the way they're addressing jungsang high as an institution, something that for example hanadan never did with makino, with the 'outcasts at a school for privileged people which actively reinforces class division'. i mean, obviously everyone thinks these guys are hot, but before that, before they become hot property, it's far more important that they're 'like gangsters', and "guys like that are wearing our uniform?" because in wearing their uniform they're devaluing it and their school and everyone in it, and holy crap. and it crosses over to teachers, which is fascinating.
and do jjang is so pretty and i love big and little, w/e their names are, and little looks like jinyoung and sandeul had a baby and big looks like chanyeol but less of a freak.
basically i am all in. and the music is grrrrreat.
