I have a serious question! is it okay to cross someone off of your attractive list just because you don't like their taste in music?
I kinda feel like music helps define a person. I think it's a bit of a big deal. I think I'd be okay if they had kinda boring tastes in music, but what if they like country? like, LIKE it.
or, maybe they just haven't experience enough non-mainstream music. before two years ago, I'd never heard of any of my favourite bands these days. Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley, Tokyo Police Club, The Grates, The Constantines, Buck 65, Michael Franti, The Decemberists, and countless other bands. never heard of 'em, but once I did I fell in love. do you think someone who likes country could like better music if they just heard it first?
the funny thing is that I used to like country. in high school I was a big fan of Sawyer Brown, Randy Travis, Dwight Yoakam, and Clint Black. but, then the calypso+newcountry thing happened and it was horrible. I think it was the song Watermelon Crawl that ruined everything. so, I switched to oldies actually. I heard oldies in the morning, oldies in the car, and pop in the evenings. it was a fun time.
living in the UK for a year and falling in love with John Peel helped me understand indie music, and just other kinds of music, much better. and then being on my own again and having my own place to play whatever last.fm played me, and that's where I am these days.
so, back to the question: is liking country music a curable disease?
(I know this is a ridiculous question, but I'm really serious!)
