I've been pondering this question for quite a while now, namely because of all the flack I've been getting for being engaged. So here is my view on things.
Love isn't just the sappy pet names and butterflies in your tummy.
Love isn't waiting up for his call and talking all night.
Love is arguing, fighting over a point, then figuring out how to make it work.
Love is being so mad you can't see straight, yet you know that they aren't going to leave.
Love has rules, but they aren't normal rules.
Love has boundaries, but they aren't normal boundaries.
Love is waking up thinking "Wow, I get to start the day with you"
Love is going to bed thinking "Wow, we just had a wonderful/awful day together"
Love doesn't mean writing his name on your notebook or sleeping in his bed.
Love doesn't mean going on one date and deciding to spend the rest of your life with him.
Love is planning, working, striving, and focusing on bettering yourself.
Love is having someone there to share in your accomplishments and failures.
Love isn't just physical, love isn't just mental.
Love is your whole being, everything from the inside out.
Love is not just being proud of your partner, but feeling proud of yourself when they are proud of you.
Love is being able to share things, from the good grade on a paper to the honor your college is giving you.
Love is getting to call in the middle of the day while they're at work to say "I have a tummy ache" and having them help figure out what's wrong.
Love is not relying on them to survive, but being whole both with them and without them.
Love is not just looking at them and wanting them. Love isn't about jealousy or mean-spirited-ness.
Love doesn't focus on the here and now, on the past, on the future.
Love is all-encompassing, the dreams for the future, the happiness and sadness from the past, the here and now.
Love is the excitement for what is to come, from rings to weddings to children and more.
Love is traveling, planning to travel.
Love is laughing over pictures you took together.
Love is not all sunshine and roses, love is anger and frustration.
Love can be tender, but it is also malicious and irritating.
And after it's all been said and done.....
..... Love is the one who is still standing next to you.
That's what love is.
