I am currently suffering from a horrible bout of insomnia. I should NOT have drank so much tea this afternoon nor should I have taken those naps around 11 pm at the chalet. After tossing and turning for half an hour, I gave up and decided to use the computer until I feel sleepy. This reminds me of the good ol days when I'd stay up till 4 am chatting with the late night (or early morning?) regulars, surfing and blogging occasionally. There's something about the tranquility of the night that makes it so conducive to unravel your thoughts and put them on paper. The 9 to 6 work routine has prevented me from staying up long enough to enjoy the peaceful night: on weeknights, I'm in bed by 11 to ensure that I get at least 7 hours of sleep before the blasted alarm clock starts ringing at 7 am and on weekends, I'm usually too tired from my 9 to 6 week to stay up till the wee hours of the morning. That is, until now. Argh.

The past two weeks have been filled with catching up with my favorite girlfriends. Although I don't see them that often, I'm glad that things haven't changed and that we wind up picking up where we left of. I'm amazed that distance and time have not managed to erode the friendship I have with these girls. Kindred spirits, as Ms. Lim calls them. I'm looking forward to catching up with even more kindred spirits when I get back to Manila next week.

It's a horrible time to be in finance right now. Retrenchment is in the air and it is not a pretty sight. Getting laid off is already bad enough, but the cherry on top of the icing is the 24 hour notice. You get THE email (or the call?) and you pack up your things the next day. Goodbye, we are deactivating your email account, deleting you from our system, you never existed. Talk about harshness. The risk-return payoff doesn't just apply to securities - it also applies to your job. The pay in the financial sector can be really high in good times but you can easily lose your job when times are bad. This serves as a personal reminder never to just jump on the bandwagon and do something because "it pays well". I will find a job that I actually like or have an interest in and never ever EVER do something solely for the money.
