the letter N... as so colourfully used by michael richards (aka Kramer from Seinfeld)...
i watched the video of him... losing it onstage at a comedy club.
and i have a few observations.
as far as i could tell he was making a point. i don't think he should've been dropping the N word... but.. hey. he did. then people exploded... shouting epiphets right back at him. yeah.... he didn't take it or respond to it in the right way... but... here's where i'm coming from.
why is the N word such an explosive word? yes. it's derogatory. but... as far i as i can tell... it's ok (if you are black) to call yourself and others that. but... any other nationality use the word? THEN it's derogatory. hmm.. *scratches head*... so a white comedian drops the N-word. what happened the last time a black comedian called white people... crackers.. or whitey or honky and was boo-ed offstage for it? OH... wait... black comedians do it ALL THE TIME with no consequence. so... for some ODD reason... it's a one-way street. nice. chris rock? dave chappelle? eddie murphy? EVEN BILL F***IN COSBY has used white-racist terms with nobody so much as batting an eye... but the MINUTE that a white person does exactly the opposite? there is HELL to pay. weird.
don't get me wrong. i don't have a problem with black comedians... well... except when they're talking up stereotypes like it's acceptable. (for example : anybody even TRY to watch "queens of comedy"... it was AWFUL.. and normally i PREFER black comedians over white ... except for say... eddie izzard and a very few others.). dave chappelle actually seems to be going the opposite direction... using stereotypes of all nationalities to ... i would like to say activate change...but ... make people laugh at how people are perceived. and i DON'T think that white people SHOULD be dropping the n-word.. but... it's a TWO way street people... if you're going to use racial slurs against any nationality other than yourself? then be prepared to have it come right back at you, and don't get so up in arms when somebody actually throws your slings and arrows back at you.
........
another... side point.
i've been reading through the comments (over 2000) that were left on one of the clips on Youtube of the incident.
first off... the people on that site .. for the most part... are morons.
secondly... there are a lot of people calling for his... death actually. with such terms as "his cracker-*ss needs to get shot".. hm... and you have a problem with people using racial slurs on YOU?... anyways...
one thing that has come out is that.... if one was to use Youtube as a gauge of public knowledge of slavery in general (and i don't mean just slavery in america) then... apparently the entire nation is full of people who drooled over their history books instead of even glancing at them.
1. slavery existed long before america did.
2. white people were slaves too... for example... serfs in medieval times... all over europe. (and parts of asia as well)
3. slavery is well documents in biblical times.
4. the irish were enslaved for .. a few hundred more years than afro-americans were by the english.
5. it was war-chiefs and tribes that sold either their slaves or opposing captured tribes into slavery to the americans.
6. while it was "white-people" who were responsible for the treatement of slaves in america... that DOESN'T mean that all of us NOW... are even descended from those people... OR share the sentiments that they do... and to portray us as pitchfork and white-sheet wielding neo-nazis is only going to further the colour gap.
so here's to ignorance... may it continue to ...
[a] give me a mild amusement.
and
[b] bridge the gaps that lie between peoples. oh... wait.
nevermind that second one.
