I know that Iowa is a very polarized state in that folks tend to be either very liberal or very conservative, and that the liberals are very much in charge at the moment.

Still, I can't wrap my brain around the fact that New York and California, which have reputations for progressive politics are so far behind the curve. For me, it's less about shock that Iowa is liberal, and more about frustration that New York is not living up to what it's "supposed to be."

I know that upstate New York is very conservative, but the N.Y. Dems took control of both houses this year. A lot of folks voted for them in hopes that they would finally pass some pro-gay marriage legislation. Once they were in power, they reneged on their campaign promises and punked out on us. Governor Patterson has done everything in his power for gays (he went out of his way to make sure that out-of-state gay marriages were recognized here), but there's a limit to what he can do alone.

I'm happy for Iowa, and I'm not as surprised as many others are. Still, I can't shake the feeling that New York is lagging pathetically behind. It's incredibly frustrating.
