I <3 Berlin

Jan 20, 2010 15:28

Just after new year. I went to Berlin with my Mum. Kylie and Jenny were and still are currently touring Europe, so seeing as we were both in the same continent, we decided to go to Berlin.

Early in the morning on the 6th, mum and I caught a flight to Berlin, with absolutly no idea what to expect.

The flight took 2 hours and soon enough we were at the airport. After a struggle we managed to get the train to Zoolichster Garten where we then got a Taxi to our awesome Hotel. In Germany, most people speak a little English, thankfully. The train system confused me to no end!

First off, time for some Beer!

Unfortunatly Kylie and Jenny were running late, so we had no option to sit and have a few beers in the hotel lobby before meeting them :)

Then it was off to Alexanderplatz for food and sightseeing.  It was great to see Jenny and Kylie again, aldo David (Swedish one) came too!

Kylie and David with the "beer tasting" set.

Mum and Jenny.

Sausage and Sourcrout... Sourcrout is...strange but edible. It was a very good meal. German Beer is pretty nice!

Followed by Gluhwein. Warm Spicy Wine. It was awesome.

Then it was time to walk about the area.  We found a frozen fountain.

Kylie and I went inside the fountain.

It was very haunting at night.

Sitting in the fountain.

This was a church. We didnt know this until we were turned away from it.

A very very beautiful church.

Me and Kylie went to Lustgarten.

I really really liked the church.

The roads were lined with statues.

This is a Berlin bear.  Mum really liked these.

I think my favourite time to see Berlin was at night. After a long walk down Alexanderplatz we got to the gate.  The hotel beside it was where Michael Jackson hung his child from the window...silly bugger.

Some of the buildings had amazing architecture. Like this pink shopping center full of designer brands.

This time mum found a blue berlin bear.

It was so cold at night so after some sightseeing we went in search of a pub/cafe for food and drinks.

Amy suggested this to me...and I must say it was awesome. Raspberry beer!

Apple Struddle was next! It was tasty but unfortunatly not as tasty as home...I like my crumbly pastry type more.

After lots of catching up, Mum and I headed back to the hotel to have a long sleep and a hot shower. Unfortunatly night in the hotel was hot hot hot so we didn't sleep that well. But the shower was awesome.

We found a cute bear outside in the street.

Berlin was so much more different in the daylight. It was strange to see all the white!

We met the girls at the gate to then go for breakfast.

But there was alot of people piling up shoes....we thought they were going to protest and burn them.

A WHOLE pile of shoes....but it was to highlight Amnest international...no burning then.  Kylie and Jenny were happy that there was some crocs in there (must get rid of all crocs).

Group photo.  The two guys on the side hid there faces because they were trying to get money to take a photo with them... We bet they weren't even American or russian....

We pigged out on breakfast.  We had a frikidelin cheese bread thing, a cherry pastry thing and I had a white chocolate coffee thing. Estimated calories - 1200 :)

We were very immature at one point :) hehe....Homosexuellen!

Then off to the astounding Jewish Memorial.

We played hide and seek outside in the memorial....hehe

In the middle was a memorial hall section with information on the war and what happened to the jew's.... It wasn't really interesting as much as it was horrifying....  We learned about the vans that looked like houses but actually gased people..however couldnt gas them and just suffocated people...and that how families were super split up.. it was very very horrifying seeing just how many people died in the war due to just persicution... but I'm glad we saw it. Afterwards there was no hide and seek or laughter near the memorial. it was very surreal.

we walked up to the parliament.

graffiti was everywhere.

Then it was time for lunch.  We saw a little deli so we decided to go. This was where we used our superior skills to order some traditional German food in German, with no translations.  We ended up with the most aweful lunch I have ever had...

Here...we guess...was Eggs..potato...bread.....salad...mayonnaise and some sort of creaming failing white/yellow sauce thing.

It was horrible.

Cake made up for it afterwards.  Also Kylie is indeed wearing a fox around her neck... Peta! where are you Peta!! :P

Jenny and her weird cake. Thank god for cakes.

Next we went to meet up for the Alternative tour in Berlin.

Pretty Kylie as we waited.

The alternative tour took us round the Graffiti areas of Berlin and also round the squats and art areas. Myself and Jenny were really looking forward to it and boy were we not let down!

We started off going to Tacheles which was a really famous art squat that had been around from the 80's. I was super excited to go.

Inside and outside was covered in graffiti!  It was an artists paradise for creative thinking.

When we walked around, it was explained to us that many times the inhabitants were told to leave, but they managed to negotiate to stay and continue creating art there. When we went into the rooms I exected the artists to be surrounded by bare minimum and just their art, but many had computers, beds and big heaters.  It was a very homey arty squat.

This was a Japanese artists space.  He was also selling work too.

I would love to live and paint and create work in such an environment.

Mostly everything was covered in art.

A russian artists work.

apparently at night parties and the like are thrown here.

Parties and BBQ's are the rage in the summer.  This is where the bar is positioned.

I've been to studio 54 now :)

Just down the street we went to see a converted Bunker.

The outside had some famous graffiti.

The top level had been made into a penthouse by a rich man and the inside an art gallery. This used to be a ravers nightclub before so.

Next we went to where the squatters cinema was.

I <3 this.

Absolutly love this.

Here is where a famous tailor saved some jewish blind people in the war.

You can see the bullet marks still on the wall.

I <3 berlin....this was a sticker. Some of the graffiti is now sticker form as its easy to remove and catchy.

Just your average Rave club!

This is a famous lesbian squat.  Unfortunatly they were kicked out last week.

O2 artwork. Apparently 02 fucked over the residents at another squat by making a concert hall. It also took part of the berlin wall memorial away to get access... German people don't like 02 apparently.

amazing transformer murial.

I loved this.

We then went to the East Side Gallery where the Berlin wall memorial was still left.   Apparently the walls paintings had faded away so last year they invited the original artists back to paint the wall again.  They did and the wall is back again. However some of the artists had died so they left those areas blank in memorial.

At the start of the Berlin wall. This section of the wall was 1.8km! We walked the whole thing!

mum liked here.

Japan featured on the Berlin wall :D

I loved this section. It was so bright and long.

The most famous part of the wall :) It was great to see it in real life.

The real picture that it was based off of.

After the long walk in the freezing cold, we headed to another famous squat that formed part of the anti fascist party.  Germany has alot of political and individualist tendancies.  The people of Berlin apparently held a referendum to ban the use of CCTV cameras. Its very rare to see them in the town. Its so strange to have a group of people that take so much interest in their country and city. It was very refreshing.

I loved this on the side of a building. I would love to live there.

Then it was time for dinner and some drinks. Myself and mum decided to have a green and a red beer.

I don't know what flavour the green one was...but it was nice. The red was of course Raspberry. Yum Yum.  It was some kind of syrup in the beer that made it so yummy.

This was dinner....an aweful aweful dinner. It was.....aweful cheese, bread, coldish gerkin salad thing...and LARD. IT was horrible....and I ate it all....

Yuck.

Afterwards we thought we would go for food as it was that bad... Lets not order German weird foods again.

At least the drinks and company was good!

Afterwards mum went home for the night as we were going on a pub crawl. The Berlin Pub crawl O_O It was nearing 9pm and it was freezing. We had been walking about since 8am in the cold and we were now continuing to do so at night too!

We first went to Studio 54's close bar and met Kylie and Jenny's friend Sarah from Auzzie.

Buy a drink and get a shot of jagermiester free was the name of the game. So we started off with apple shots and German Jegermiester.

Kristian, and Peter from Sweden also came on the pub crawl. It was great to see them.

The girls jumped in too!  It was great to see them!

Afterwards we then headed to two more bars and then a nighclub. On the way to the next one we noticed the prostitutes outside.

Ugg boots/moon boots/white trousers/body warmer/bum bag and hat. It was very very strange to see them in the street. But there were so many of them! They also looked exactly the same!!

On the way to our final destination Kylie decided I needed her lipstick. So she put red on me. I was very pale after that. The last club was strange..the music wasn't that great and there was a podium full of extrememly gay men. They weren't gay, but if people fit stereotypes...they should have been camp gay men. It was so odd. There was a small rock section and then a pop section. I must say...my grey jumper was not worth wearing...but oh well. I didnt know we would go clubbing! At about 3am we said goodbye and I had to take a taxi to the hotel as the trains were only 24hours at the weekend (DOH) 23 euros later was bed and waking mum up to sleep! Opps!

We then woke up, packed and headed out for a quiet breakfast.

My breakfast was HUGE :) I loved it!

We unfortunatly had a bit of a problem getting back as the train suddenly stopped and we didnt know what to do.. We luckily got a taxi to the airport (30 euros or something!) and got the plane fine. It was late, but we got back.

At the end of it I felt like I wanted to go back someday. Berlin is very free thinking and has a crazy night life. Some of the nightclubs were open until 3pm the next day aparently. Theres also kitkat S&M clubs, Ravers clubs, rock clubs, everything really. It just seems like a crazy and fun place to be. Maybe in Oktoberfest I can come back again. Lovely city, Lovely company, Bloody freezing!!
